Chapter 13 - The Winter Table

The Winter Table met beneath a private alpine resort that had been closed to the public for renovations. From above, the property appeared empty. Beneath it, elevators descended into a circular chamber lined with black stone.
Gabriel gave them twenty-four hours.
Mara wanted federal tactical teams to storm the resort. Elias warned that the trust's servers could erase themselves if biometric keys were not presented voluntarily. Billions in assets would disappear into accounts controlled by unknown partners.
Madison cared less about the money than the children whose records might vanish with it.
Raven House had contained hundreds of photographs.
They went in with a controlled plan.
Madison wore a concealed transmitter. Elara posed as her. Elias carried false trust credentials. Mara's team waited inside maintenance tunnels. Julian remained missing, but Madison believed he would come.
The chamber held thirteen chairs around a white stone table. Eleven were occupied by men and women Madison recognized from public life: a federal judge, a hospital chairman, a former governor, two insurance executives, and Lenora Vale.
Vanessa stood behind the final empty chair.
Gabriel entered last.
He resembled Elias enough to make the room feel distorted. Same height, same pale eyes, same habit of touching one thumb to the opposite ring finger while thinking.
"Welcome home," Gabriel said to Madison.
"This was never my home."
"Blood decides that, not comfort."
He described the origin of the Winter Table. Generations earlier, the Thorne family created private systems to protect fortunes from unstable heirs. Over time, protection became control. Children were relocated, identities altered, marriages arranged, and deaths manufactured whenever inheritance threatened the system.
"You turned families into accounts," Madison said.
"Families are accounts. Emotion merely hides the arithmetic."
Gabriel revealed that Elias had been adopted into the Thorne line after the biological heir died as an infant. Celeste was not his blood daughter, but she was the legal key to the trust. Gabriel, the biological Thorne son, believed the fortune had been stolen from him.
"Then Celeste was your daughter," Elias said.
Gabriel's face changed almost imperceptibly.
"Yes."
The confession struck the room like a blade.
Celeste had been Gabriel's biological child, secretly placed with Elias to preserve public succession. When she discovered the truth, she tried to divide the inheritance among her children and expose the network.
Gabriel ordered her confined.
Lenora arranged the birth transfers.
Vanessa controlled the replacements.
"Did you kill her?" Madison asked.
Gabriel looked at Vanessa.
"Celeste made a choice."
Vanessa answered, "She chose not to surrender the infants."
Madison understood.
"You killed her."
The transmitter beneath her coat pulsed once, signaling that Mara had heard enough.
But before tactical teams entered, Lenora placed a small device on the table.
Every door sealed.
Gas hissed into the maintenance tunnels.
The Winter Table members had expected betrayal.
Vanessa approached Madison with a medical injector. "The baby must be delivered now."
Elara stepped forward. "Take me instead."
"You are no longer useful," Vanessa said.
Elara struck her. The chamber erupted.
Elias overturned the stone table. Madison crawled behind it as gunfire tore through chairs. Winter Table members fled through hidden doors. Mara's voice shouted through the earpiece, distorted by interference.
Lenora moved toward Madison with the injector.
Preston appeared from a service passage and tackled his mother.
No one had known he was coming.
"Run," he shouted at Madison.
Lenora drove a blade into his side.
Madison grabbed the injector from the floor and stabbed it into Lenora's arm. The older woman collapsed, conscious but unable to move.
Vanessa escaped with Gabriel through the final hidden door.
Elara chased them.
Elias found an emergency release and opened the chamber as Mara's team broke through the tunnels. Julian arrived moments later carrying a server module ripped from Gabriel's private control room.
"The child records are here," he said. "But the trust key is activating."
Madison doubled over.
A contraction seized her with enough force to steal her breath.
Naomi, waiting with the tactical medics, examined her.
"The labor cannot be stopped now."
Across the chamber, the central screen illuminated.
A countdown began.
Two hours until the trust opened automatically.
One line appeared beneath it.
PRIMARY HEIR CARDIAC VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Then a second line appeared.
CURRENT PRIMARY HEIR: UNBORN CHILD OF MADISON VALE.
A third line followed.
SECONDARY HEIR: ELARA THORNE.
During the fight at the Winter Table, the former governor attempted to destroy a paper register by setting it on fire. Elias stamped out the flames and recovered a list of locations called continuity houses. Raven House was only one. Others existed beneath schools, clinics, religious charities, and military hospitals. Each had stored children whose identities could be activated later. Mara understood that arresting the Table would not automatically free those victims. The network had outlived many of its founders because institutions, not individuals, carried its habits forward.

Madison searched the chamber.
Elara was gone.
