Chapter 10 - The Child They Wanted
The demand transformed Madison's pregnancy from motive into target.
Naomi performed an emergency ultrasound in the mobile medical unit. The baby appeared healthy despite the trauma, but a small shadow near the heart concerned her. She ordered advanced imaging.
The results revealed something no prenatal scan had shown before.
A microscopic device had been placed near the fetus during an earlier procedure.
Madison remembered a test Preston and Adrian had insisted upon at twenty weeks. They called it a specialized genetic screening. She had been sedated.
The device emitted a coded signal.
Not a tracker.
A key.
Elias's engineers discovered that the signal matched the encryption protecting the Celeste trust. The trust had been designed to open only when a living descendant's unique cardiac rhythm was verified. Someone had turned Madison's unborn child into a biological password.
"They do not simply want the inheritance," Elias said. "They need the baby alive long enough to unlock it."
"Then why order Preston to kill us?"
"Because they believed the device could preserve the rhythm after death, or because the person who gave Preston his orders did not know the true plan."
The conspiracy contained factions.
That made it more dangerous.
Mara traced the photograph of Madison's possible twin to a print shop near the river. The clerk remembered a woman with Madison's face but shorter hair. She paid in cash and wore a ring engraved with two ravens.
Security footage showed the woman entering a waiting car.
The driver was Adrian Cross.
Adrian contacted them before they could find him. He proposed an exchange at an unfinished luxury hotel: the original Celeste files for safe passage out of the country. He claimed Vanessa had turned against the Vale family and intended to keep the baby for herself.
Madison agreed to meet him.
The hotel tower rose above the city like a skeleton. Wind moved through empty floors. Mara's team occupied nearby buildings while Elias waited in an armored vehicle below.
Adrian arrived alone carrying the black medical case.
"Where is my sister?" Madison asked.
"Her name is Elara."
The name struck something deep in Madison's memory. A child whispering in the dark. Ela, wait for me.
"Is she alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Close enough to see you, not close enough to trust you."
Adrian opened the case. Inside were original birth records, photographs, and a small vial of blood.
He explained that Elara had survived the lake. Vanessa raised her inside the network as a substitute heir. Unlike Madison, Elara remembered everything. She had learned to imitate Madison's signature, voice, and habits. On several occasions, she had appeared in Madison's place without anyone noticing.
"When?" Madison demanded.
"The night your insurance policy changed. The day the trust documents were signed. Perhaps other times."
Madison felt violated by a stranger who shared her face and childhood.
A red laser dot appeared on Adrian's chest.
Mara shouted through Madison's earpiece, "Move."
Madison pulled Adrian behind a concrete pillar as a rifle shot shattered the case. Papers exploded into the wind. Adrian collapsed, wounded in the shoulder.
Across the unfinished floor, a woman ran between columns.
She looked exactly like Madison.
Madison chased her toward the open edge of the building. The woman stopped with the city far below and turned.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Different expression.
"Elara?"
The woman raised a pistol, but her hand trembled.
"You were supposed to die on the mountain," she said.
"Did you order it?"
"I tried to stop it."
"Then help me."
Elara laughed bitterly. "You have Elias, the police, and a life they protected. I had Vanessa."
"We were both stolen."
"No. You were returned. I was kept."
Another shot struck the pillar beside them. Elara grabbed Madison and pulled her into a stairwell, saving her.
For one breath, the sisters stood face to face.
Then Elara pressed something into Madison's palm.
A hospital bracelet.
"The baby is not the first key," she whispered. "You are."
She disappeared down the stairs before Mara arrived.
On the inside of the bracelet, beneath Madison's birth code, was a second name.
ELIAS THORNE JR.
Madison stared at it.
Adrian survived the sniper shot because Madison dragged him behind the pillar. While medics treated him, he confessed that he had delivered Elara's child years earlier. The infant was removed before Elara regained consciousness and declared stillborn. Elara joined Vanessa afterward because Vanessa promised to reveal where the child had been taken. This explained why Elara hesitated to destroy the trust. She believed the fortune might be the only leverage capable of buying her child back. Madison realized that her sister's betrayal might be another desperate form of motherhood.
