Chapter 13 - The Second Inheritance

No one knew what the second inheritance meant.

Not Celeste.

Not Arthur’s documents.

Not the board.

Nina searched the recovered Project Mirror files.

Most were corrupted.

The surviving index listed two trusts.

The Ellison Control Trust.

And the Vale Continuity Trust.

The first contained my father’s hidden shares.

The second was created by Rebecca before her death.

Its assets were unspecified.

Its beneficiary was listed only as Subject V.

Adrian’s final-session recording suggested Celeste taking control was not the end of his plan.

It was a condition.

He needed Rebecca’s daughter to inherit something before another transfer could occur.

Celeste sat in a private conference room while police questioned Malcolm and Dr. Cross separately.

She looked exhausted.

I placed the copy of my father’s letter before her.

“You are named as the second beneficiary.”

She read the paragraph.

“My mother knew your mother?”

“Apparently.”

“Why would your family protect me?”

“Because my father failed to protect Rebecca.”

Celeste looked at the city.

“All this time, Lillian said my mother died when I was a baby.”

“She may have believed the truth would endanger you.”

“She sent me into Vale Global anyway.”

“She needed access.”

“So she used me.”

“Yes.”

Celeste gave a bitter laugh.

“At least you admit it.”

I sat across from her.

“You used me too.”

“I know.”

“You placed the box at Julian’s house.”

“I arranged it before I understood Malcolm intended to take the family.”

“You wore my robe.”

“That had nothing to do with the investigation.”

“I know.”

For the first time, shame reached her face.

“I wanted you to feel small.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian spent months telling me you were cold. That you did not love him. That you kept him trapped through your shares and your family name.”

“And you believed him.”

“I wanted to.”

“Because believing him made the affair easier.”

“Yes.”

There was no apology capable of repairing it.

But truth was more useful than apology.

“Why did you turn against him?” I asked.

“I found Lillian’s hidden file. I learned he had authorized Cross to create medical records under my name too.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“He was preparing to replace you.”

“Or declare me incapable once I inherited.”

The pattern required an unstable woman at every stage.

Rebecca.

Me.

Celeste.

Adrian moved assets through women, then discredited them when they became dangerous.

My phone displayed a message from an unknown number.

The photograph showed Arthur being carried into an ambulance.

Alive.

Beneath it were four words.

One debt has been paid.

I showed Mercer.

“Could Lillian have rescued him?”

“Possibly.”

“Why remain hidden?”

“Because someone besides Adrian and Malcolm is still hunting her.”

Nina entered the conference room remotely through the display.

“I found the Vale Continuity Trust.”

The trust was registered in Switzerland.

Rebecca created it seventeen years earlier using funds taken from Halcyon’s first accounts.

Adrian claimed she stole the money.

In reality, she may have moved it to prevent him from accessing it.

The trust’s current value exceeded six hundred million dollars.

Celeste stared at the number.

“That belongs to me?”

“Not exactly,” Nina said.

“The trust activates when Rebecca’s biological daughter gains voting control of Vale Global.”

“And then?”

“Forty-eight hours later, all assets transfer to a second beneficiary.”

“Who?”

“The registry is encrypted.”

“Can you break it?”

“Eventually.”

“We do not have eventually.”

The board had suspended Adrian and appointed an interim committee.

Malcolm’s appointment failed after his payments became public.

I could activate my father’s shares and take control.

That would place Celeste next in line if I became incapacitated.

But doing so might trigger Rebecca’s trust and reveal the second beneficiary.

It might also activate another part of Adrian’s plan.

The board requested my decision by noon.

The company’s stock had begun falling in overseas trading.

Reporters surrounded headquarters.

Regulators requested records.

Employees were frightened.

Every hour without stable leadership increased the possibility that Vale Global would collapse.

Adrian sat under guard in his office, technically detained but not arrested.

His attorneys had already secured a temporary order preventing police from removing him without formal charges.

I entered alone.

He stood near the window.

“You always wanted this room,” he said.

“No. I wanted the man I thought worked inside it.”

“That man never existed.”

“I know.”

“Then why look disappointed?”

“Because knowing a lie is not the same as forgetting the life built around it.”

He turned.

“You can still protect the company.”

“By protecting you?”

“By refusing to activate Thomas’s shares.”

“Why are you afraid of Celeste gaining control?”

“I am not afraid of Celeste.”

“Then who is the second beneficiary?”

Adrian smiled.

“Ask your mother.”

“She is dead.”

“Are you sure?”

The room narrowed around me.

My mother, Evelyn Ellison, supposedly died from cancer twenty-two years earlier.

I attended the funeral.

I watched the coffin lowered.

Adrian saw my expression and laughed softly.

“Thomas built his fortune on identities, offshore structures, and strategic disappearances. You believed every secret belonged to me.”

“What are you saying?”

“The woman buried in your mother’s grave was not Evelyn.”

“Prove it.”

“Activate the trust.”

“You need me to activate it.”

“I need the truth released.”

“Why?”

“Because the second beneficiary is the only person more dangerous than Malcolm.”

“Who is she?”

He stepped closer.

“The woman who taught Rebecca how to disappear.”

An alarm sounded throughout the floor.

Mercer entered.

“Adrian’s private helicopter has been activated remotely.”

“Where is it?” I asked.

“On the roof.”

“Who is aboard?”

“The pilot reported one passenger.”

Security footage appeared on a nearby screen.

A woman in a dark coat crossed the rooftop.

Wind hid her face.

She carried a medical bag.

As she entered the helicopter, she looked toward the camera.

My mother’s face appeared beneath the hood.
