Chapter 11 - The Board Meeting at Sunrise

At 6:52 a.m., Vale Global’s directors began assembling on the forty-first floor.
Nina monitored the internal calendar through an access token Lillian had hidden in the Halcyon archive.
Malcolm arrived first.
Dr. Cross entered through the executive elevator.
Three directors joined remotely.
Adrian remained inside his private office.
He had not been suspended because Malcolm needed the board to witness his removal.
The spectacle would legitimize the transition.
Meanwhile, Julian, Mercer, Celeste, and I entered the underground garage through a service ramp.
Sofia Reyes waited in an unmarked car one level above.
She had brought two officers she trusted.
No tactical team.
No federal agents.
No guarantee that the building’s security staff would obey lawful commands.
Samuel stood beside the elevator on B4.
The children were not visible.
He held one hand inside his jacket.
I carried the leather case.
Mercer and Julian remained behind a concrete column.
Celeste waited inside the vehicle.
I walked toward Samuel alone.
“You look tired,” he said.
“You look exactly the same.”
He had driven me to funerals, medical appointments, court hearings, and anniversary dinners.
His familiar face now felt like another disguise.
“Where are the children?”
“Inside.”
“Show me.”
“Give me the case.”
“No.”
He sighed.
“Mrs. Vale, I hoped this would not become unpleasant.”
“You watched Adrian drug me.”
“I followed instructions.”
“You knew what happened to Rebecca.”
His eyes shifted.
That was enough.
“You helped move her body during the renovation.”
“I drove the vehicle.”
“You knew she was inside.”
“I knew there was a container.”
“Do not insult me with technical distinctions.”
He removed his hand from his jacket.
It held a remote control.
“One button seals this level and releases fire suppressant into the executive archive room.”
“Are the children there?”
“No.”
“Then why should I care?”
“Because the complete Halcyon ledger is there. The only evidence capable of proving your signatures were obtained through fraud.”
“You expect me to trade my brother’s children for documents?”
“No. Mr. Vale expects you to trade the case for access to the elevator.”
I placed the leather case on the ground.
“Open it,” he said.
“You first.”
Samuel entered a code.
The rear door of a parked delivery van unlocked.
Julian’s children sat inside with their wrists bound.
They were frightened but conscious.
The moment Julian saw them, he moved.
Mercer caught his arm.
Samuel noticed the shadow.
He raised the remote.
I kicked the leather case toward him.
He instinctively looked down.
Mercer emerged with his gun drawn.
“Police. Drop it.”
Samuel pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
Nina had already disabled the building’s remote control network.
Samuel reached for his weapon.
Sofia’s officers entered from the ramp.
A shot echoed.
Samuel fell against the van.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Julian ran to the children.
I picked up the case.
Samuel looked at me from the concrete floor.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“Adrian isn’t the one who ordered the children taken.”
“Malcolm?”
Samuel smiled through the pain.
“Ask Celeste.”
I turned.
The vehicle where Celeste had been waiting was empty.
She had entered the elevator alone.
The executive elevator rose toward the forty-first floor.
Mercer handcuffed Samuel while Sofia secured the garage.
Julian stayed with the children.
I entered the second elevator.
Mercer followed.
At 7:04, we reached the executive floor.
The boardroom doors were open.
Malcolm stood at the head of the table.
Adrian sat at the opposite end.
Dr. Cross occupied a chair beside the screen displaying the fabricated medical report.
Celeste stood near Malcolm.
All conversation stopped when I entered.
Malcolm recovered first.
“Mara, this meeting is restricted.”
“I own more of this company than anyone in this room.”
Adrian looked at the leather case.
“You went to Connecticut.”
“You sent men after us.”
“I sent people to retrieve stolen company documents.”
“Did they kill Arthur Bell?”
His expression did not change.
Malcolm stepped forward.
“The board is currently evaluating evidence of serious misconduct by both you and Adrian.”
“You mean the misconduct you financed through Northstar Civic Strategies?”
Several directors turned toward him.
He smiled.
“Mara is experiencing an acute psychiatric episode.”
I placed my phone on the table.
The email to one hundred and twenty-seven recipients had already exposed Adrian.
Now Nina released a second package.
Payments from Halcyon Meridian to Malcolm.
Consulting fees to Dr. Cross.
The false medical certification.
Photographs of the sedatives.
Lillian’s recording.
Directors’ phones began vibrating.
Malcolm’s face remained calm.
“You obtained these files illegally.”
“Then dispute their contents.”
“I intend to.”
Adrian looked toward Celeste.
“What did you give her?”
Celeste said nothing.
I studied her.
“Did you order Rachel’s abduction?”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“I ordered Danielle to place the box.”
Julian had been right.
Celeste had framed me.
“Why?”
“To force Mercer to reopen Lillian’s case.”
“You put my brother’s family in danger.”
“I did not order the kidnapping.”
“Who did?”
“Malcolm.”
Malcolm laughed.
“A convenient accusation.”
Celeste turned toward him.
“You said Rachel and the children would be questioned, not taken.”
“You wanted leverage.”
“Against Adrian.”
“And leverage does not work unless someone feels pain.”
Adrian rose from his chair.
“You have been working with Malcolm?”
Celeste faced him.
“I worked with everyone who promised to destroy you.”
His expression became almost paternal.
“Rebecca would be ashamed.”
Celeste struck him.
The sound cracked across the boardroom.
Adrian touched his cheek.
“You knew who I was,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Before the affair?”
“From the day you applied.”
“And you still…”
She could not finish.
Adrian’s cruelty required no explanation.
Malcolm called security.
No one entered.
Nina had transmitted evidence to employees throughout the building.
Security officers were already refusing executive commands.
Dr. Cross attempted to leave.
Mercer blocked the door.
“You are not going anywhere.”
Cross looked at me.
“You have no idea what Lillian did.”
“She exposed you.”
“She manipulated Celeste. She manipulated Mercer. She manipulated your father.”
“Where is she?”
Cross smiled faintly.
“Closer than you think.”
The boardroom screen changed.
Lillian appeared live.
She was sitting in a dark room.
A clock behind her showed the current time.
7:11 a.m.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Mara, do not activate your father’s shares.”
I stepped toward the screen.
“Lillian?”
“If you take control of Vale Global, the contingency begins.”
“What contingency?”
“The company will release evidence tying your father to Rebecca’s murder.”
I looked at Arthur’s case.
Lillian continued.
