Chapter 6 - the woman who entered through his wife)

Daniel stared at the newspaper clipping for so long that Rachel wondered whether he could still hear them.
MARRY HIM.
Two words.
A red circle around his face.
A date two years before Emily met Vanessa.
Margaret sat beside him.
"Daniel."
He did not respond.
Officer Hale placed the clipping back inside the evidence sleeve.
Daniel finally looked up.
"Where did Claire get this?"
"Vanessa kept a storage unit."
Rachel frowned.
"What storage unit?"
"Claire helped her move boxes into it years ago."
"Where?"
"Virginia."
"Has it been searched?"
"Claire is providing details."
Daniel stood and walked to the corner of the consultation room.
He pressed both palms against the wall.
Rachel watched his shoulders rise and fall.
For years, Daniel had believed Vanessa entered his life after tragedy.
Now it appeared she may have created the path toward him deliberately.
Maybe long before Emily died.
Margaret whispered.
"She befriended Emily to reach him."
Rachel nodded.
Daniel turned.
"No."
Rachel stared at him.
He shook his head.
"No. I can't accept that from one clipping."
Officer Hale said.
"You shouldn't. We verify evidence."
Daniel looked at him.
"Good."
Hale continued.
"But Claire has also provided messages."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"What messages?"
"Old screenshots."
"Between who?"
"Vanessa and Trevor."
Hale opened his tablet.
"I won't show you everything while the investigation is active, but one message from seven years ago references Emily by name."
Rachel's pulse quickened.
"What does it say?"
Hale read carefully.
"'She trusts me now. Daniel still barely knows I exist. Give it time.'"
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel whispered.
"Jesus."
Hale continued.
"Months later, another message says, 'She talks about him constantly. He is loyal. That makes this harder.'"
Rachel asked.
"Harder to what?"
"We don't have the full thread."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"She needed my wife to die."
Hale remained neutral.
"We do not make that conclusion until evidence supports it."
Daniel looked at him.
"But you think it."
Hale did not answer.
Rachel sat beside her brother.
For once, she did not accuse him.
She did not remind him he had ignored Emily.
The truth was already doing enough damage.
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
"You need to stop trying to understand Vanessa as your wife."
His expression tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means every memory you have is filtered through who you thought she was."
Daniel stared at the clipping.
Rachel continued.
"You may have loved a person who didn't exist."
He looked away.
At 3:20 p.m., child protective services interviewed Daniel.
Rachel was not in the room.
When he emerged, his face was gray.
"They're letting Noah leave with Mom temporarily."
Margaret nodded.
"You can stay at my house too."
Daniel swallowed.
"Thank you."
Rachel asked.
"Vanessa?"
"No contact."
"Good."
Daniel did not argue.
That alone told Rachel how much had changed.
Noah was discharged at four.
Margaret carried him out through a private entrance.
Daniel followed.
Rachel stayed behind with Officer Hale for another interview.
He asked about Claire.
When did Rachel know her?
Had Emily ever mentioned her?
Had Rachel ever seen Vanessa at the hospital before Emily's death?
Rachel searched her memory.
Then something surfaced.
"Yes."
Hale looked up.
"When?"
"The day Emily died."
He stopped writing.
"Where?"
"Hospital lobby."
"What time?"
Rachel tried to remember.
The call from Daniel had come around six in the morning.
She had rushed to the hospital even though Emily had already been declared dead.
Vanessa had been there.
Of course she had.
At the time Rachel assumed Daniel called her.
"Maybe seven thirty."
"Was she with Daniel?"
"No."
"Did she speak to you?"
Rachel closed her eyes, rebuilding the scene.
Vanessa sitting near the vending machines.
Holding two coffees.
Her eyes red.
She had hugged Rachel.
Then she said something.
Something Rachel had forgotten because the morning had been full of grief.
"She asked whether Emily's body would be autopsied."
Hale's pen stopped.
"Exact words?"
"Something like, 'Are they really going to cut her open after everything she's been through?'"
"Did that seem unusual?"
"Not then."
"Now?"
Rachel looked at him.
"Now everything does."
Hale wrote.
Rachel continued.
"She also kept asking whether Daniel remembered what time she had left the night before."
"Why?"
"She said she wanted to make sure she gave police accurate information."
Hale's expression hardened.
"Did you know she had been at the house?"
"No. Daniel never told me."
"Would you have found that important?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Emily had told me two weeks earlier that she and Vanessa were fighting."
Hale stopped again.
"What?"
Rachel's breath caught.
Another memory.
How many had she buried?
Emily in Rachel's kitchen.
Coffee untouched.
Saying, "Vanessa is acting weird about Daniel."
Rachel had teased her.
"Maybe she has a crush on him."
Emily had not laughed.
At the time Rachel thought her sister in law was being jealous.
Then Emily said.
"Sometimes I think she wants my life."
Rachel whispered now.
"Emily told me Vanessa wanted her life."
Officer Hale's face remained calm.
"Did you tell Daniel?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I thought it was marital insecurity."
Her voice cracked.
"I told Emily to stop feeding the drama."
Hale said nothing.
Rachel lowered her head.
For four years, she had blamed Daniel for not listening.
She had not listened either.
The realization hurt.
At 5:10 p.m., Rachel finally left the hospital.
She drove to Margaret's house.
Police had advised them not to return to Daniel's property.
Vanessa was still being questioned.
Trevor Shaw had not yet been located.
Claire was under protective supervision.
When Rachel entered Margaret's living room, she found Daniel sitting on the couch holding Noah.
The room was quiet.
The same room where Daniel and Emily had opened wedding gifts nine years earlier.
The same room where Vanessa had later stood holding a champagne glass at Daniel's second engagement party.
Rachel put down her bag.
Daniel looked at her.
"I keep replaying everything."
Rachel sat.
"That won't help tonight."
"I defended her."
"I know."
"I defended her against you."
"I know."
"I told you that you were bitter because you loved Emily."
Rachel looked at him.
"You were grieving."
"That's not an excuse."
"No."
Daniel nodded.
He appreciated that she did not pretend otherwise.
Noah stirred.
Daniel looked down.
"She wanted him dead."
"We don't know exactly what she planned."
"Claire said it."
"Claire said Vanessa discussed making it look like he stopped breathing."
Daniel's jaw clenched.
"That's enough."
Rachel watched him.
"Do you still love her?"
He looked up.
The question hurt him.
"Yes."
Rachel had not expected honesty.
Daniel continued.
"And I hate that I do."
Margaret appeared from the hallway.
"You loved who she showed you."
Rachel gave her mother a faint look.
She had just said something similar.
Margaret sat.
"The real question is what you do now that you know."
Daniel looked at Noah.
"I protect him."
Rachel nodded.
"And yourself."
Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
He showed the screen.
Rachel gestured.
"Speaker."
Daniel answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Dan."
Daniel's face changed.
"Trevor."
Rachel stood immediately.
Trevor laughed softly.
"Sounds like you've had a rough day."
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you?"
"Not important."
"You tried to hurt my son."
"Careful."
Rachel motioned for Margaret to take Noah.
Daniel handed over the baby.
Trevor continued.
"You don't know what happened."
"I know enough."
"No. You know Vanessa is unstable."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Trevor said.
"She's been unstable for years."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Then why were you planning with her?"
A pause.
Not long.
But enough.
Trevor recovered.
"Planning what?"
"The trust. Noah. Rachel."
Trevor sighed.
"Claire."
Rachel's blood ran cold.
Trevor knew.
Daniel asked.
"What about Emily?"
Silence.
Then Trevor said something nobody expected.
"Emily wasn't supposed to die."
Rachel stepped closer to the phone.
Daniel whispered.
"What did you say?"
Trevor continued.
"Vanessa got impatient."
Margaret sat down heavily.
Daniel's voice changed.
It became almost calm.
"What did she do?"
Trevor laughed once.
"You think I'm going to confess over the phone?"
Rachel quietly began recording on her own device.
Trevor said.
"I called because you need to understand something. Vanessa is going to blame all of this on you."
Daniel frowned.
"Me?"
"She kept copies of your signatures. Emails. Messages. She has spent years building a version of events where you're controlling, violent, unstable."
Rachel remembered Vanessa shouting outside the house.
They're stealing my baby.
Public.
Loud.
For witnesses.
Trevor continued.
"If she realizes she's going down, she'll burn you with her."
Daniel said.
"Why warn me?"
"Because she has something of mine."
"What?"
"Something I need."
Rachel whispered.
"The storage unit."
Daniel heard.
"What is in the storage unit, Trevor?"
Silence.
Then.
"Ask your sister."
Rachel froze.
Daniel looked at her.
Trevor continued.
"Rachel has seen part of it already."
"I haven't."
"Yes, you have."
Rachel's mind raced.
The clipping.
Emily's evidence.
The video.
The hidden phone.
Trevor laughed quietly.
"The hospital."
Rachel felt cold.
"What about the hospital?" she asked.
Trevor stopped.
He had not realized she was listening.
"Rachel."
Her voice hardened.
"What about St. Matthew's?"
Trevor hung up.
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
"What did he mean?"
Rachel stared at the phone.
Then she remembered Claire.
A pharmacy technician.
Vanessa obtaining medications.
False identities.
Hospital records.
This did not start at Daniel's house.
It had used the hospital.
Possibly for years.
Rachel stood.
"I need to call Hale."
Before she could, her phone rang.
Officer Hale.
Rachel answered.
His first words made her sit back down.
"We found Trevor's storage unit."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"And?"
"We need you at the station."
"Why?"
"Because there are photographs inside."
"Of what?"
May you like
A pause.
"Of you."
