SAY IT AGAIN / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Say It Again

The confrontation happened on a Monday evening.

The gym was unusually crowded because heavy rain had canceled several outdoor fitness classes.

Bethany arrived at six thirty.

She wore her loose gray workout top and navy leggings. She tied her hair back, placed her bottle near a bench, and began warming up.

Larry entered ten minutes later.

They had not spoken since he left the house.

He approached her carefully.

“I came to cancel my membership.”

Bethany looked at him.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I don’t want to train here anymore.”

“Because of Marcus?”

“Because of who I became around him.”

Bethany’s expression softened slightly.

“That is the first thing you’ve said that sounds like responsibility.”

Larry nodded.

“I also asked management for the group posts.”

“What did they say?”

“They said social media activity outside the gym wasn’t their concern.”

“Of course.”

“But filming members without permission violates policy.”

“Only if we can prove it.”

Larry glanced toward the entrance.

Marcus had just arrived.

“I told him not to come near you,” Larry said.

Bethany almost smiled.

“You still think he listens to you.”

Marcus walked across the gym with his bag over one shoulder.

He stopped beside Larry.

“So this is the intervention?”

“Leave her alone,” Larry said.

Marcus ignored him and looked at Bethany.

“I hear you’ve been filing complaints.”

“I asked the gym to enforce its own rules.”

“You mean Maya did.”

Bethany’s eyes narrowed.

Marcus smiled.

“People talk.”

Across the room, Maya stood near the front desk. She had gone still.

“Do not involve her,” Bethany said.

Marcus placed his bag on a chair.

“You’re the one involving everyone.”

He removed his phone and set it against his water bottle.

The camera faced the benches.

Bethany noticed the red recording symbol reflected in the mirror.

So did Larry.

“Turn it off,” Larry said.

Marcus shrugged.

“I’m checking my workout.”

“You haven’t started.”

Marcus looked at Bethany.

“See what you’ve done? He used to be fun.”

Bethany stepped closer.

“What exactly did I do?”

“You walked into a place where you didn’t belong and demanded that everyone change for you.”

Several nearby members slowed their exercises.

Bethany kept her voice controlled.

“What kind of people belong here?”

“People who can handle pressure.”

“And I cannot?”

Marcus smiled.

“You’re proving that now.”

Larry moved forward.

“Stop.”

Marcus raised a hand.

“I’m talking to Bethany.”

“No,” Bethany said. “You are performing for your phone.”

Marcus’s eyes flicked toward the device.

Bethany continued.

“You photograph women without permission. You mock beginners. You provoke people and record their reactions.”

“That sounds dramatic.”

“You posted pictures of me.”

“They were public gym photos.”

“You took them secretly.”

Marcus laughed.

“You should be grateful anyone noticed.”

Larry stepped toward him.

“Apologize.”

Marcus turned.

“To her?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked around at the growing audience.

Then he smiled at Bethany.

“We were just joking.”

Bethany stopped directly in front of him.

“Then say it again.”

The gym seemed to narrow around them.

Marcus tilted his head.

“What?”

“Repeat the joke. Say exactly what you said when you thought I couldn’t hear you.”

Marcus glanced toward the people watching.

“You’re too sensitive.”

“What did you say?”

“Bethany,” Larry warned gently.

She did not look away from Marcus.

“What did you say about me?”

Marcus leaned closer.

“You really want to hear it?”

“Yes.”

His voice dropped.

“I said Larry must be desperate to come home to you every night.”

Bethany’s hand moved before thought could stop it.

The slap lasted less than a second.

The consequences would last much longer.

Marcus clutched his cheek.

Larry stared in shock.

Bethany immediately stepped back.

She knew she had crossed a line.

Then she saw the phone.

Still recording.

She picked it up.

Marcus reached toward her.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

She touched the screen.

The recording began to play.

At first, only the recent argument appeared.

Then Bethany noticed the video had begun several minutes earlier.

Marcus had recorded himself joking with Larry before she approached.

His voice filled the gym.

He mocked her age.

Her body.

Her marriage.

And Larry laughed.

The sound changed everything.

The crowd turned toward Larry.

Bethany felt the last remaining hope inside her become painfully still.

She played the recording until Marcus tried to grab the phone.

Maya stepped between them.

“Management is on the way.”

Marcus pointed at Bethany.

“She assaulted me.”

Bethany placed the phone down.

“Yes,” she said. “I did. And I will accept the consequences.”

Then she looked at Larry.

“But I will not accept yours anymore.”

She walked out of the gym.

The rain had stopped.

The pavement shone under the parking lot lights.

Bethany stood beside her car, breathing slowly.

For the first time in weeks, no one was telling her what she had seen.

May you like

No one was explaining what she should feel.

The truth was finally loud enough for everyone.
