SAY IT AGAIN / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Plan Behind the Phone

Bethany did not return to the gym for four days.

She told herself she needed space, but the truth was more complicated.

She was angry at Marcus.

She was devastated by Larry.

Most of all, she was ashamed that she had spent weeks questioning her own reaction.

Marcus had insulted her openly.

Larry had dismissed her privately.

Between them, they had created a version of reality in which Bethany was unreasonable whenever she objected to being mistreated.

She began writing everything down.

Dates.

Comments.

Conversations.

The private group post.

The moment Larry admitted seeing it.

She did not do this to prepare a lawsuit. She did it because details became harder to deny when placed in order.

On the fifth morning, Bethany returned to Harbor Strength.

Maya looked surprised.

“I thought you might cancel your membership.”

“I considered it.”

“What changed?”

“I realized leaving would solve Marcus’s problem.”

Bethany walked to the dumbbell area and began her session.

Marcus was not there.

Larry arrived twenty minutes later.

He approached cautiously.

“You came without telling me.”

“I’m allowed to exercise without submitting a schedule.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

Bethany adjusted the bench.

“Then say what you mean.”

Larry sat beside her.

“I left the group.”

Bethany looked at him.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Why last night?”

Larry hesitated.

“Marcus posted another picture.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It mattered enough for you to leave.”

Larry stared at the floor.

“He said you were training for a divorce.”

Bethany felt a cold pressure beneath her ribs.

“And what did you say?”

“I told him to delete it.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him never to film me again?”

“Yes.”

“Did he agree?”

Larry’s silence returned.

Bethany picked up her dumbbells.

“What did he say?”

“He said you enjoyed the attention.”

The weights suddenly felt heavier.

Larry leaned toward her.

“I told him he was wrong.”

“After how many weeks?”

“I’m trying.”

Bethany completed her set and placed the weights down carefully.

“Trying is not the same as changing.”

“I left the group.”

“You left after he embarrassed you by mentioning divorce.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Did you leave when he mocked my body?”

Larry looked away.

Bethany stood.

“That is what I thought.”

As she walked toward the water station, she saw Marcus enter the gym.

He wore his usual red tank top and carried a black gym bag. His gaze moved directly to Bethany.

Then to Larry.

Marcus smiled.

“Trouble in paradise?”

Larry stood.

“Not today.”

Marcus placed his bag beside a bench.

“You finally left the chat.”

“Stop posting about my wife.”

Marcus looked amused.

“I was motivating her.”

“You were filming her.”

“People film in gyms.”

“Not like that.”

Bethany remained near the water station, listening.

Marcus lowered his voice, but the mirrors made it easy to see his expression.

“You need to control the situation before she controls you.”

Larry’s shoulders tightened.

“This isn’t your business.”

“You made it my business every time you complained about her.”

Bethany’s fingers closed around her water bottle.

Larry glanced toward her.

He realized she had heard.

Marcus followed his gaze.

His smile widened.

“Speak of the champion.”

Bethany walked toward them.

“What did Larry complain about?”

Larry stepped between them.

“We’re not doing this.”

Marcus ignored him.

“He said you always need the final word.”

Bethany looked at Larry.

Marcus continued.

“He said you manage the house like a company. He said you joined the gym because you couldn’t stand him having one thing without you.”

“Enough,” Larry said.

Marcus laughed.

“You said it.”

Bethany’s face remained calm.

Inside, something was breaking.

Not suddenly.

Not dramatically.

It was breaking with the quiet certainty of a door being unlocked.

Marcus lifted his phone.

“Relax. Nobody’s attacking you.”

Bethany noticed the camera pointed toward her.

“Are you recording?”

Marcus glanced at the screen.

“Checking my form.”

“You aren’t exercising.”

He lowered the phone.

“You really do think everything is about you.”

Bethany looked at Larry.

“Are you going to say anything?”

Larry’s mouth opened.

Then Marcus clapped him on the shoulder.

“Come on. We’ve got a set.”

Larry remained still for one second.

Then he followed Marcus toward the benches.

That was the moment Bethany stopped waiting for Larry to choose her.

May you like

She returned to her workout.

But now she had a plan.
