ONE CALL EXPOSED THE HOSPITAL / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Second Call

Nadia returned home under federal protection.

For the first several nights, she slept with the lights on.

Mara never mentioned it.

She left the hallway light burning, kept the bedroom door open, and placed a secure phone on the table within Nadia’s reach.

They spoke about the hospital only when Nadia chose to.

Some mornings, Nadia said nothing.

On others, she remembered details investigators had not yet discovered.

A nurse who quietly loosened her restraints.

A patient in the next room who communicated by tapping against the wall.

A white badge marked with a lighthouse symbol.

A man who watched the questioning from behind mirrored glass.

Mara wrote down every detail.

One evening, Nadia entered the kitchen carrying the cracked phone recovered from beneath the van.

“Agent Price returned it.”

“Did they finish extracting the files?”

“They think so.”

“You don’t?”

Nadia sat across from her.

“The recording application created a hidden backup whenever the battery dropped below ten percent.”

“Where did it send the backup?”

“I designed it to choose one of three locations.”

“Which three?”

“My personal server, General Rowe’s archive, or a physical device connected to the phone before the recording started.”

Mara understood.

“You connected it to something at Novaris.”

“My workstation.”

“Caleb’s team would have searched it.”

“They searched my company account. The backup was stored inside a diagnostic partition.”

Nadia opened her laptop.

“I recovered another conversation.”

She pressed play.

At first, Mara heard Caleb speaking to Vivienne.

The girl contacted Rowe.

Then came Vivienne’s reply.

That was expected.

Caleb sounded surprised.

You wanted her to find the transfers?

We needed Harrison to reopen the old investigation.

Why?

A third voice entered the conversation.

A man.

Because Colonel Harrison is the only person who can access the sealed casualty archive.

Mara stopped the recording.

“What casualty archive?”

“I don’t know,” Nadia said.

“Play the rest.”

The recording continued.

Caleb asked, What is inside it?

The man answered.

The truth about her husband.

Vivienne’s voice followed.

And if she refuses to open it?

The man laughed softly.

Then we use the daughter.

The recording ended.

Mara stared at the laptop.

Everything that had happened to Nadia may have been intended to force Mara toward another file.

A sealed casualty archive.

Her husband, Captain Adrian Harrison, had died sixteen years earlier during a training exercise in Alaska. The official report blamed mechanical failure.

Mara had read every page of it.

Or believed she had.

She contacted Agent Price.

He arrived with Captain Cho before midnight.

Price listened to the recording and checked the federal database.

“There is a restricted archive connected to your husband’s unit,” he said.

“Why was it sealed?”

“National security authority.”

“Whose authority?”

“The approval field is hidden.”

“Can you open it?”

“No.”

“Can I?”

Price looked at her.

“The system lists one authorized identity.”

“Mine.”

He nodded.

Nadia closed the laptop.

“This is what they wanted.”

Mara looked at her daughter.

“Then we do not open it here.”

Price agreed.

“There is a secure federal facility twenty minutes away.”

They left through the rear entrance while protective officers secured the street.

At the facility, Mara entered an isolated records room.

The computer requested her military credentials, biometric verification, and a voice authorization.

She completed each step.

A warning appeared.

SEALED CASUALTY ARCHIVE 7A

UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE MAY RESULT IN CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

Mara selected OPEN.

The system processed the request.

One folder appeared.

CAPTAIN ADRIAN HARRISON.

Inside were flight records, witness statements, photographs, and an audio file recorded six hours before the crash.

Mara opened the audio.

Her husband’s voice filled the room.

“Mara, if this reaches you, then I failed to stop them.”

Nadia took her mother’s hand.

Adrian continued.

“Vale Memorial was not a hospital research program. It was a testing ground for a financial control network. They used medical records, military contracts, and personal secrets to recruit officials.”

Mara’s eyes remained fixed on the screen.

“I found the first ledger,” Adrian said. “But the person directing the operation is inside our family.”

Nadia looked at Mara.

“What does that mean?”

Before Adrian could name the person, the audio stopped.

The screen displayed an error.

FILE CORRUPTED.

Agent Price checked the system.

“This was altered recently.”

“How recently?” Mara asked.

“Twenty-three minutes ago.”

Someone had accessed the sealed archive while they were driving to the facility.

A second folder appeared on the screen.

It had not been there before.

ONE CALL.

Mara opened it.

A live video feed filled the monitor.

General Rowe sat inside a dark room, restrained to a chair. A figure stood behind him, hidden by shadow.

Rowe looked directly into the camera.

“Mara, do not believe the casualty report. Adrian survived the crash.”

Nadia’s grip tightened.

Mara moved closer to the screen.

“Where is he?”

The hidden figure placed a phone on the table in front of Rowe.

It began ringing.

At the same moment, Mara’s secure phone rang inside her jacket.

The caller identification showed a number that had been inactive for sixteen years.

Adrian Harrison.

Every person in the room went silent.

Mara answered.

For several seconds, she heard only breathing.

Then a man spoke.

His voice was older, but she recognized it instantly.

“Mara, they are listening. You have to find the second hospital before Nadia remembers who she saw behind the glass.”

Nadia stepped backward.

A memory surfaced across her face.

The mirrored observation room.

The man watching from the other side.

She whispered a name.

Before Mara could hear it clearly, the lights in the federal facility went out.

The live feed vanished.

The call disconnected.

Emergency power returned seconds later.

On the screen, a single message remained.

LIGHTHOUSE PHASE 2 HAS BEGUN.

Beneath it was a photograph taken only minutes earlier.

It showed Nadia and Mara entering the secure federal facility.

Standing in the background was someone Mara had trusted for most of her life.

The face had been deliberately blurred.

But on the person’s chest was a military badge bearing the highest clearance level in the country.

And beneath the photograph were four words.

ASK NADIA WHO SHE REMEMBERED.
