Chapter 1 - The Name Behind the Account

Nadia’s fingers tightened around the front of Colonel Mara Harrison’s uniform as the medical bed rolled into the hospital corridor.
“They locked me away,” Nadia whispered, her voice shaking. “Then they tried to call it an accident.”
Colonel Harrison placed herself between the bed and the doorway. She did not raise her voice. She did not need to.
Her decorated uniform, rigid posture, and controlled expression silenced nearly everyone in the corridor.
Nearly everyone.
Vivienne Vale stood beneath the glowing sign for the private medical wing, dressed entirely in white. At seventy-two, the chairwoman of St. Catherine Medical Center still carried herself like someone accustomed to controlling every room she entered.
A cold smile touched her face.
“Colonel,” Vivienne said, “you are creating a scene in my hospital.”
Mara’s eyes remained fixed on her.
“You kept my daughter in a locked room for eleven days.”
“For her own protection.”
“You altered her medical records.”
“She was confused.”
“You told three doctors she had no family.”
Vivienne’s smile widened.
“Your uniform means nothing here,” she said quietly. “We control everyone in this building.”
Mara reached into her jacket and raised her phone.
“Then you should have checked who was already listening.”
The audio began playing.
At first, there was only the faint sound of a ventilation fan. Then came Vivienne’s voice, sharp and unmistakable.
Move her before Harrison returns.
Another voice answered.
What if the girl talks?
Vivienne responded without hesitation.
Then make her look unstable. Accidents happen every day in hospitals.
The color drained from the faces of the administrators gathered behind her.
Two military police officers stepped forward.
Vivienne turned toward them, but they did not look at her. They looked to Colonel Harrison for instruction.
Nadia’s breathing quickened. Mara placed one hand over her daughter’s trembling fingers.
“You are safe,” Mara said. “Stay with me.”
Footsteps sounded from the far end of the corridor.
A man in a dark federal jacket approached, carrying a sealed gray file. Special Agent Owen Price displayed his credentials as he passed the hospital security guards.
“Colonel Harrison,” he said, “the hospital evidence also exposed where the missing defense funds went.”
Vivienne’s smile disappeared.
Agent Price opened the file.
“Over forty-eight million dollars was transferred through medical research accounts controlled by this hospital. The final account belongs to…”
Every person in the corridor leaned closer.
Vivienne suddenly lunged toward the nearest fire alarm.
One of the military police officers caught her wrist before she reached it.
At the same moment, every light in the private wing went dark.
The medical monitor beside Nadia’s bed switched to emergency power. Red warning lights flickered along the ceiling.
Somewhere beyond the locked doors, an alarm began to sound.
Agent Price looked down at the file in his hand.
The final page was gone.
Mara stared into the darkened corridor as doors began locking automatically, one after another.
Vivienne laughed softly.
“You thought one recording would end this?”
Mara pulled Nadia closer.
May you like
“No,” she said. “The recording was only the beginning.”
Eleven days earlier, Nadia Harrison had made the call that started everything.
