Chapter 6 - The Man Who Stayed Behind

Daniel Mercer disappeared the next morning.

His wife reported that he had not returned home after work. His phone was switched off. His car was found in a parking garage near Carter Development’s headquarters.

Richard told the board Daniel had suffered a personal crisis.

Amelia did not believe him.

Neither did Detective Hale.

The search authorization for Richard’s estate and Troy’s SUV was approved shortly after noon.

Police found James’s black storage case inside a locked cabinet in Richard’s private study.

The case contained damaged computer drives taken from Amelia’s house.

It also contained Daniel Mercer’s phone.

Richard was brought in for questioning but insisted Daniel had left the phone voluntarily. Troy claimed the storage case had been placed in his car without his knowledge.

Both men were released while investigators examined the evidence.

Amelia watched the news from Celia’s apartment.

After the bank visit, Celia refused to let Amelia remain alone at the hotel. Her apartment was small and warm, filled with plants and photographs of two adult daughters.

“You can stay until your house is safe,” Celia said.

“I barely know you.”

“Sometimes barely is enough.”

That evening, Amelia received an email from an unfamiliar address.

The subject line contained one word.

TOMORROW.

The message had no text. Only an audio attachment.

Daniel Mercer’s voice began quietly.

“Amelia, if this reached you, James’s scheduled delivery system is still active.”

She turned up the volume.

“Your husband contacted me six weeks ago. He knew I had helped your father hide losses and create false vendor reports. I told myself I was saving the company. The truth is that I was saving my salary and protecting my reputation.”

Daniel paused to breathe.

“James offered me a chance to cooperate. I gave him copies of internal communications. Richard discovered what I had done.”

Amelia looked toward Celia, who was listening from the kitchen doorway.

“The night James died, Troy returned to the office after midnight. He was shaking. He told Richard there had been an accident. Richard ordered me to delete vehicle-tracking data from Troy’s company SUV.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I deleted it from the local system, but James had already created a remote copy.”

The recording continued.

“Yesterday, Richard forced me to go with them to your house. He said James had hidden an archive in the office. We searched the room. When we couldn’t find it, Richard told Troy to destroy everything.”

Amelia’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“I refused. Richard locked me inside the office storage closet while they started the fire. They thought I would remain silent because I was guilty too.”

Celia covered her mouth.

“I escaped through the adjoining bathroom after they left. I took one drive from James’s cabinet before the fire spread. I’m going to the authorities, but I don’t know who Richard controls. James told me to send this to you first.”

At the end of the recording, Daniel gave the location of a motel near Salem.

Detective Hale and state police reached it forty minutes later.

Daniel was alive.

He had suffered smoke exposure and a fractured wrist while escaping, but his injuries were not life-threatening. He agreed to cooperate fully.

His testimony gave investigators what they needed.

The fire had been deliberate.

Richard had ordered it.

Troy had started it.

Daniel also confirmed that Richard had known about James’s road investigation before the crash. Richard had told Troy to frighten James into abandoning the audit.

Troy later claimed he only intended to force James to stop the car.

He had driven away because he was afraid.

Richard then used company contacts to conceal the SUV’s damaged side panel and delete its tracking history.

Amelia sat at Celia’s kitchen table as Detective Hale explained the developments.

“So my father knew Troy left James on the road.”

“Yes.”

“He looked at me in the hospital and said the accident was nobody’s fault.”

Detective Hale did not offer an excuse on Richard’s behalf.

Amelia appreciated that.

“What happens now?”

“We’re preparing charges, but your father is still trying to control the situation. He has requested a private meeting with the board tomorrow.”

“He wants to convince them I’m unstable.”

“That would be my guess.”

Amelia stood and walked toward the window.

For years, Richard had won by defining people before they could define themselves.

James was reckless.

Daniel was weak.

Amelia was fragile.

Troy was merely impulsive.

Richard was always the protector cleaning up everyone else’s mistakes.

Amelia turned back to Detective Hale.

“Let him hold the meeting.”

Celia studied her face.

“What are you planning?”

Amelia picked up her mother’s trust documents.

“My father wants to tell the family version of the truth.”

May you like

She slipped James’s memory card into her wallet.

“I think the board should hear all of it.”
