Chapter 10 - When Amelia Returned to the Airport

Two years after the afternoon no one came for her, Amelia returned to Portland International Airport.
This time, she was not carrying James’s clothing.
She held a small sign bearing the name MARTIN REYES.
Martin was a Carter Collective electrician whose wife had died unexpectedly while visiting family in Arizona. He had flown there to bring their teenage daughter home.
The Tomorrow House travel program arranged their tickets and transportation.
Amelia did not usually meet every arrival herself.
This one felt important.
Celia stood beside her in the baggage-claim hall, still wearing the same navy airport uniform.
“You know we have drivers for this,” Celia said.
“I know.”
“And volunteers.”
“I know.”
“You’re the executive chair of a company with three thousand employees.”
“Two thousand eight hundred and fourteen.”
Celia laughed.
“You remembered the exact number.”
“I read the report this morning.”
The luggage carousel began moving.
Amelia looked toward the place where her suitcase had burst open.
The terminal appeared unchanged. Stainless steel reflected the bright overhead lights. Travelers waited impatiently for their bags. Flight information moved across the blue screens.
Yet Amelia was not the woman who had knelt on that floor.
Her grief had not disappeared.
She still missed James when sunlight touched the kitchen counter at a certain angle. She still reached toward his side of the bed during dreams.
Some losses did not become smaller.
Life simply grew around them.
Martin appeared through the arrivals doorway with his daughter, Sofia.
He looked exhausted and uncertain.
Sofia carried a small black suitcase.
When she saw the sign, her expression changed.
“You came,” Martin said.
“Of course,” Amelia replied.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know who to call.”
“You don’t have to know yet. We’ll help with the next few days.”
Celia took Sofia’s suitcase.
Amelia led them toward the exit, where a car was waiting.
Halfway across the terminal, a loud metallic sound came from behind them.
A suitcase had fallen from a luggage cart.
Its zipper split.
Clothing scattered across the floor.
A woman stood frozen beside it while travelers began walking around her.
Amelia stopped.
For one breath, she was back in the past.
James’s burgundy shirt lay against her chest.
Her family’s unanswered messages glowed on her phone.
Smoke moved across the security screen.
Then the memory released her.
Amelia turned to Martin.
“Go ahead with Celia. I’ll be there in a moment.”
She walked back toward the carousel.
The woman had dropped to her knees and was gathering the clothing with trembling hands.
Amelia knelt beside her.
“Let me help.”
The woman looked up.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
Amelia folded a blue sweater and placed it inside the damaged suitcase.
“Is someone coming for you?”
The woman looked toward the arrivals doors.
“I don’t think so.”
Amelia took a baggage strap from the nearby assistance station.
“Then we’ll make sure you’re not alone.”
Together, they secured the suitcase.
When Amelia stood, her phone vibrated.
For an instant, she remembered the emergency alert that changed everything.
This notification was from Tomorrow House.
MARTIN AND SOFIA REYES TRANSPORT CONFIRMED.
Amelia smiled and locked the screen.
Outside, evening light moved through the terminal windows.
Celia waited near the exit with Martin and Sofia.
Three people who had once been strangers were waiting for her to join them.
Amelia walked toward them.
No one had come for her on the worst day of her life.
Her father had been too busy protecting himself.
Her brother had been too frightened to face what he had done.
The people who should have loved her had chosen silence, deception and fire.
But their absence had not become the ending of her story.
It became the moment Amelia learned what it meant to arrive for someone else.
She crossed the terminal and stepped outside with the others.
Behind them, the airport doors opened again and again, releasing travelers into the arms of people who had been waiting.
Amelia looked at the faces beneath the terminal lights.
Then she thought of James’s final words.
Home is the place where someone comes looking.
For years, Amelia believed she had lost her home.

Now she understood that she had built one.
And this time, no one would be left waiting alone.
