Chapter 4 - A Dinner Built on Lies

The dinner table was set with Margaret’s best dishes.

Daniel arrived late and avoided Claire’s eyes. Thomas poured wine for everyone, though Claire covered her glass before he could fill it.

“I’m driving,” she said.

Thomas smiled.

“Always responsible.”

The compliment sounded like an accusation.

Margaret served roast chicken and vegetables. For ten minutes, they pretended to be an ordinary family.

Then Thomas leaned back.

“Daniel told us about the misunderstanding.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

Claire set down her fork.

“What misunderstanding?”

“The papers he photographed.”

Thomas spoke calmly, but the muscle beside his jaw tightened.

“They were part of an estate-planning exercise.”

“A forged DNR is not estate planning.”

“It was never filed.”

“How do you know which document I mean?”

Silence spread across the table.

Thomas’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Claire turned to her mother.

“Did you witness my signature?”

Margaret began to cry.

Thomas reached for her hand.

“Your mother has been under enormous pressure.”

“Answer me.”

Margaret looked at Thomas before looking at Claire.

“We were trying to protect both of you.”

“By preparing to deny me medical treatment?”

“No one wants that.”

“Then destroy the document.”

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

“You have become very suspicious.”

“I have become informed.”

Claire removed a printed photograph of the old birth record from her handbag and placed it on the table.

“Who is Evelyn Hale?”

Margaret made a small sound.

Daniel pushed his chair back.

Thomas did not look at the paper.

“That name means nothing.”

“Then why is it in a locked file with my original birth record?”

“You broke into my office?”

“Daniel found it.”

Thomas turned toward his son.

The anger in his eyes made Daniel shrink.

Claire saw it and understood something painful.

Daniel had been protected, but he had also been controlled.

Thomas stood.

“This conversation is over.”

“No,” Claire replied. “It is beginning.”

She explained that her attorney had copies of every document. She did not mention the DNA test.

“If anything happens to me, the files go to the police, the hospital board, and Evelyn Hale.”

Thomas’s face remained still.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel whispered, “Dad, tell her.”

Thomas walked around the table until he stood behind Claire’s chair.

“You have always believed success made you powerful,” he said. “But every document that built your life began with us. Your name, your education, your first bank account. We created Claire Whitmore.”

Claire looked up at him.

“No. You controlled her.”

She stood and took her coat.

Margaret followed her toward the door.

“Claire, wait.”

For one weak moment, Claire hoped her mother would finally tell the truth.

Instead, Margaret whispered, “Please don’t contact Evelyn. It would destroy this family.”

Claire felt the last piece of her childhood break.

“What family?”

She left.

Behind her, Thomas turned to Daniel.

“You should never have opened that cabinet.”
