Chapter 2 - The Empty Birth Record
Claire met Daniel at a twenty-four-hour diner near the highway.
He sat in a corner booth wearing a baseball cap pulled low over his face. A cup of coffee rested untouched before him.
Claire slid into the seat opposite him.
“Show me.”
Daniel placed his phone on the table.
The screen displayed photographs of old documents. Some were difficult to read, but one contained the name Evelyn Hale.
Another was a hospital transfer record dated twenty-nine years earlier.
At the bottom appeared a handwritten note.
Infant female moved under private authorization.
Claire enlarged the image.
“What is this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where did you find it?”
“In Dad’s locked cabinet.”
“You broke into his cabinet?”
“I was looking for the title to my car.”
Claire gave him a tired stare.
Daniel looked away.
“I found a folder behind the drawer. It had your birth certificate, but not the one you use now.”
He swiped to another photograph.
The original record listed no father. The mother’s name had been blacked out, but part of the surname remained visible.
Hale.
Claire’s mouth went dry.
“Did Dad see you?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Why are you showing me this?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Because there was another file.”
He opened a photograph of a recent medical form.
Claire recognized the format immediately. It was an advance medical directive from Saint Marlowe Medical Center.
Her name appeared at the top.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked like hers.
But it was not.
The document instructed hospital staff not to resuscitate Claire if her heart or breathing stopped. It also named Thomas Whitmore as the person authorized to make medical decisions.
Claire felt the diner grow distant.
“I never signed this.”
“I figured.”
“Why does Dad have it?”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“He asked me about your blood type last week.”
Claire stared at him.
“What did you tell him?”
“Nothing. I didn’t know.”
She stood so suddenly that the table moved.
“We are going to the police.”
Daniel caught her wrist, then released it immediately when she looked down at his hand.
“Wait. We need to know what this is.”
“We know it is a forged medical document.”
“Dad has lawyers. He’ll say it was a draft.”
“It has a witness signature.”
Daniel’s face had gone pale.
Claire examined the photograph again.
The supposed witness was Margaret Whitmore.
Her mother.
“We need the original,” Claire said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I can get it.”
“No. You have done enough.”
“Claire, I’m the reason they made it.”
She froze.
Daniel stared at the table.
“The program Mom mentioned is real, but it isn’t for stress. I need surgery.”
“What kind?”
“Something they found during my last examination. The doctor said it is treatable, but there could be complications.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Dad said you would use it to control me.”
Claire nearly laughed at the cruelty of the lie.
She had spent years cleaning up Daniel’s mistakes, yet their father had convinced him that help was control.
Daniel continued.
“Dad kept saying you and I were compatible.”
“For what?”
“I don’t know. He wouldn’t explain. He just said families make sacrifices.”
Claire sat again.
“Listen to me. Your treatment does not require me to stop receiving medical care.”
“I know that.”
“Do you?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.
“I didn’t know about the DNR until I found it.”
Claire studied his face.
For the first time, he did not look like the favored son.
He looked like a frightened young man who had finally discovered the price of being favored.
“Send me every photograph,” she said.
“What are you going to do?”
May you like
Claire looked down at the name Evelyn Hale.
“I’m going to find out who I was before our parents decided for me.”
