Chapter 7 - The Plan Behind the Wedding

Detective Elena Marquez from the financial-crimes unit arrived at Clara’s house that afternoon.

She was direct, observant, and unimpressed by Ethan’s attempt to describe the situation as a “complicated divorce.”

“This is not complicated,” Marquez said after reviewing the evidence. “It is layered.”

The fake divorce order had been created using a real order taken from Bellweather Capital’s archive. The names had been replaced. Dates had been changed. A copied image of a judge’s signature appeared at the bottom.

The forged order claimed Clara had surrendered the house to Ethan as part of a settlement.

A second document—a quitclaim deed—carried Clara’s forged signature and a false notary stamp.

The home-equity application requested $280,000.

Most of the funds were scheduled to be transferred to a newly opened business account controlled by Ethan and Madison.

The business was called Mason Hale Properties.

“They planned to purchase investment apartments,” Detective Marquez explained. “At least, that’s what the loan documents say.”

“With money borrowed against my house,” Clara said.

“Yes.”

“And after taking the money?”

Marquez turned one page around.

A draft sales agreement showed that Ethan intended to sell the house to a property-development company within sixty days.

Clara stared at the paper.

“He was going to sell my home?”

“He was going to try.”

Ethan had told Madison they would use the loan proceeds to begin a luxury real-estate business. Once the house was sold, he promised they would move to Arizona and start over.

Clara’s life had been reduced to seed money for their new beginning.

“What stopped them?” she asked.

“The lender requested direct confirmation from you,” Marquez said. “The letter you received was part of that process.”

“He thought I wouldn’t open it.”

“Or that the fake divorce order would make your objections look like those of a former spouse.”

Clara walked to the window.

The maple tree moved gently in the afternoon wind.

Her grandmother had planted tulips beneath it every spring. Clara had repainted the porch with her own hands. She had built Haven & Pine in the upstairs room while Ethan complained that her fabric samples made the house look untidy.

He had not only wanted to leave.

He had wanted to erase her ownership of everything she built.

“Where is he now?” she asked.

“At the station with an attorney.”

“And Madison?”

“She has agreed to cooperate.”

Clara turned sharply.

“After helping him?”

“Cooperation does not erase responsibility.”

“Is Ethan blaming her?”

Marquez almost smiled.

“He says Madison created every forged document and manipulated him into marriage.”

Clara let out a small, bitter laugh.

Of course he did.

Ethan had always treated responsibility like a burning object. The moment it hurt him, he threw it at the nearest person.

Marquez closed the folder.

“He also claims you knew about the loan.”

“I didn’t.”

“We know. The lender recorded a verification call made by a woman pretending to be you.”

Clara’s face went still.

“Madison?”

“She denies making it.”

“Then who?”

“We’re investigating.”

After the detective left, Clara went upstairs and opened Ethan’s desk.

She had avoided searching it because she did not want the truth to resemble revenge.

Now it resembled evidence.

Inside the bottom drawer, beneath old tax records, she found a prepaid phone.

There were four saved recordings.

In one, Ethan coached a woman to repeat Clara’s date of birth, address, and Social Security number.

The woman’s voice was unmistakable.

It belonged to Ethan’s mother.
