Chapter 5 - The Complaint That Backfired

Officer Daniels expected a hostile domestic dispute.
Instead, he found a calm woman with organized records and a husband making accusations from an airport lounge.
After reviewing the deed, card statements, and messages, he stepped away from the porch to speak with his supervisor.
Officer Ruiz remained with Clara.
“Did your husband have a key before last night?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“And he stated in writing that he no longer lived here?”
Clara pointed to the message.
“He also told me to arrange for his belongings to be collected.”
Ruiz nodded.
“We’re not deciding property rights on a porch. But this doesn’t look like the theft report he described.”
Officer Daniels returned.
“We contacted the county clerk listed on the document,” he said. “They confirmed there is no divorce order involving you and your husband.”
Clara wrapped her arms around herself.
Even though she already knew, hearing it officially made the betrayal feel heavier.
“What about Las Vegas?” Natalie asked.
“They’re checking the marriage-license application.”
Officer Daniels looked at Clara.
“Your husband stated in his complaint that he was legally divorced and that you were retaliating because he remarried.”
“Will you meet him at the airport?”
“We’ve asked him to come to the station.”
Clara’s phone rang.
Ethan.
Officer Daniels motioned for her to answer on speaker.
Clara accepted the call.
“You reported me to the police,” she said.
“You left me no choice.”
“The officers are here.”
“Good. Give them my cards and tell them to make you let me inside.”
Officer Daniels spoke.
“Mr. Mason, this is Officer Daniels.”
Silence.
Then Ethan cleared his throat.
“Officer, thank you. My wife is unstable right now. She’s angry about the divorce.”
“We have not located a divorce record.”
A pause.
“It was handled through a private filing service.”
“Which court issued the order?”
“I don’t have the paperwork in front of me.”
“You submitted paperwork in Nevada last night.”
“My attorney handled it.”
“What is your attorney’s name?”
The line remained quiet.
Finally, Madison’s voice could be heard in the background.
“Ethan, what is happening?”
He covered the phone, but not well enough.
“Nothing. Clara is creating drama.”
Officer Daniels continued.
“Mr. Mason, you need to report to the central station when your flight arrives. Bring all documents relating to your divorce and marriage.”
“Am I being arrested?”
“No one said that.”
“Then I’ll call my lawyer.”
“That would be wise.”
Ethan disconnected.
The officers left after collecting copies of the evidence.
Before stepping off the porch, Daniels turned back.
“Keep your doors locked. Call immediately if he appears.”
At ten twenty, Clara received a message from an unknown number.
It was Madison.
What did you tell the police? Ethan says you’re trying to destroy us.
Clara stared at the words.
Then another message arrived.
He showed me your divorce papers. He said you signed everything.
Clara replied with one sentence.
I never signed anything.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Then appeared again.
That’s impossible.
Clara photographed her bare left hand beside the mortgage letter.
Ask him why he applied for $280,000 against my house.
May you like
Madison did not respond.
But thirty minutes later, the wedding post vanished.
