Chapter 8 - The Owner Returns

Three weeks after the divorce, Alice returned to Hartwell headquarters.
Reporters waited outside, but she entered through the employee entrance instead of the marble lobby Aiden had renovated for publicity.
The building felt both familiar and changed.
Aiden’s portrait had been removed from the executive corridor. His private office was sealed while investigators completed their review. Employees paused when Alice passed, uncertain whether to greet her as an owner, a colleague, or the pregnant woman whose private humiliation had become public news.
Alice solved the problem by greeting them first.
In the design department, she stopped beside a model of a community housing project her father had approved years earlier.
Aiden had suspended it because the profit margins were too small.
Alice ordered the project restored.
In the finance department, she reviewed the receiver’s report.
Aiden and Madeline had diverted more than three million dollars through consulting contracts, travel expenses, property deposits, and executive purchases.
The money could be recovered.
The trust’s properties remained intact.
The attempted sale had been stopped only hours before the buyer gained irrevocable control.
“You were close to losing the eastern portfolio,” Samuel told her.
“How close?”
“By the end of that business day, the transfer might have been extremely difficult to reverse.”
Alice thought of the courier envelope that had fallen open beside the ultrasound photograph.
One loose flap had changed everything.
Evelyn joined them carrying a settlement proposal from Aiden’s new legal team.
“He wants to resolve the civil claims privately,” she said.
The proposal required Aiden to return disputed assets, resign permanently, and surrender his interest in several personal properties. In exchange, he wanted Alice to support a request that prosecutors treat the case as a business dispute.
Alice closed the document.
“No.”
Samuel looked surprised.
Evelyn did not.
“He will say you’re acting out of revenge,” Evelyn warned.
“He may say whatever he likes.”
“Are you certain?”
Alice stood and walked to the window.
Far below, construction crews moved across the city. Some worked on Hartwell projects. Others worked for competitors. From that height, they looked small, but Alice knew each person carried a life that could be damaged by decisions made in rooms like this one.
“Aiden tried to take the company from the trust,” she said. “He tried to erase me. But he also planned to fire hundreds of people and walk away with the money.”
She faced Evelyn.
“If I protect him now because he was once my husband, I would be doing exactly what allowed this to happen.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I’ll reject the proposal.”
That afternoon, Alice entered her father’s former office.
Aiden had converted it into a private conference lounge years earlier. The original desk had been placed in storage.
Alice ordered it returned.
She placed Thomas’s silver pen beside the family photograph he had kept there.
Then she sat behind the desk.
May you like
For the first time since his death, the office felt like Hartwell again.
