Chapter 6 - The Day He Chose Madeline

The morning of the divorce hearing, Alice woke before sunrise.

For several minutes, she remained in bed listening to the quiet house.

Aiden’s side of the wardrobe was empty. His books were gone from the shelves. The framed wedding photograph that once stood near the window had been removed weeks earlier.

Only a pale square remained where sunlight had not touched the wall.

Alice dressed slowly.

The cream dress had been altered twice to fit her growing belly. Her long white coat had belonged to her mother. She pinned her hair back, chose comfortable black heels, and placed Thomas’s letter inside her handbag.

Trust carefully. Love generously. But never confuse love with surrender.

At the courthouse, Aiden arrived with Madeline.

Madeline wore white tweed and carried a small bouquet inside a shopping bag, apparently hoping no one would notice it before the hearing.

Aiden looked at Alice’s pregnant belly, then quickly looked away.

His attorney approached Evelyn.

“Mr. Cole is prepared to finalize today.”

“So is Mrs. Hart,” Evelyn replied.

Inside the courtroom, the judge reviewed the disclosures.

Alice answered each question clearly.

Yes, she understood the marriage would be dissolved.

Yes, she had entered the settlement voluntarily.

Yes, she believed the agreement properly separated personal marital property from assets owned by outside legal entities.

Aiden did not react to the final phrase.

His attorney did.

The man leaned closer and whispered something, but Aiden shook his head.

When the judge questioned him, Aiden confirmed that Hartwell Developments belonged solely to him.

He confirmed that Alice held no beneficial interest.

He confirmed that every corporate transfer had been legitimate.

Evelyn did not interrupt.

Neither did Alice.

The judge signed the divorce decree at 10:42 a.m.

Aiden released a quiet breath.

Madeline smiled from the back row.

The marriage was over.

Alice expected to feel grief.

Instead, she felt space opening around her.

Outside the courtroom, Aiden approached.

“The divorce is final,” he said. “Madeline and I are getting married today.”

Madeline joined him and linked her arm through his.

“You should accept that you lost,” she said.

Alice rested one hand on her belly.

“I didn’t lose. My attorney was waiting for your signature.”

Aiden frowned.

His phone rang.

At almost the same moment, his attorney’s phone began buzzing.

Then Madeline’s.

Aiden answered first.

Alice watched his expression collapse.

The court had signed Evelyn’s emergency petition immediately after the divorce decree. Hartwell’s accounts were frozen. The pending Northstar sale had been blocked. A receiver had been appointed to secure records and prevent the destruction of evidence.

The protective trust clause had activated.

Aiden stared at his screen.

“The court froze the company,” he whispered. “And every account?”

“Every account connected to the disputed transfers,” Evelyn answered.

Alice turned toward the courthouse exit.

Behind her, Aiden began asking questions faster than his attorney could answer.

By the time Alice reached the sedan, he understood enough to become afraid.

He ran after her.

But the woman he chased was no longer his wife.

And the empire he had expected to claim was no longer within his reach.
