Chapter 6 - The Investigation Behind Closed Doors
General Whitmore learned about Claire’s situation through the Army legal office.
He called her personally.
“Colonel Bennett, why did I have to hear from an attorney that you and your newborns were displaced?”
Claire stood in the apartment kitchen warming a bottle.
“This is a private family matter, sir.”
“It stopped being private when someone forged your identity and attempted to access protected financial accounts.”
Claire said nothing.
Whitmore’s voice softened.
“You have spent fifteen years ensuring other families receive what they need. Allow your people to support you.”
The next morning, a team began coordinating the complex pieces of the case.
Local detectives investigated the false deed and illegal lockout.
Financial investigators examined the attempted transfers.
Army security officials reviewed whether Daniel or his family had tried to access devices or files connected to Claire’s work.
They found something worse than Claire expected.
Months before the twins were born, Daniel had photographed documents from Claire’s home office. Most were harmless administrative papers, but several contained contact information and identification numbers.
He had given the photographs to Vanessa.
Vanessa used them to create authorization forms that appeared to grant Daniel control over Bennett Heritage Holdings.
She had also searched Claire’s desk for passwords.
The mansion’s internal security cameras captured part of the activity.
Margaret had instructed a housekeeper to disable the recording system, but the footage remained backed up remotely.
One video showed Vanessa carrying files from Claire’s office.
Another showed Margaret practicing Claire’s signature.
A third showed Richard meeting Lorraine Pike, the false notary, in the mansion library.
The most damaging recording captured Daniel entering the room.
He looked at the papers on the table.
He asked, “Will this make the house mine?”
Margaret answered, “It will make the house ours again.”
Daniel remained silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “Do it before Claire comes home.”
When Sophia played the footage for Claire, the apartment seemed to shrink around her.
Until that moment, a small part of her had believed Daniel’s worst actions came from weakness. She thought perhaps Margaret had manipulated him while he was frightened by fatherhood and overwhelmed by debt.
The video destroyed that hope.
Daniel had known.
He may not have understood every legal detail, but he knew his mother planned to take the house while Claire was recovering from childbirth.
He gave permission.
Claire watched the recording a second time.
Then she closed the laptop.
“What happens now?” she asked.
Sophia explained that investigators were preparing search warrants. The title dispute had already blocked Daniel from selling or borrowing against the mansion.
The bank accounts connected to the fraudulent documents had been frozen.
Lorraine Pike had agreed to cooperate after learning she could face prison. She admitted Margaret had paid her to certify the false signature.
“She says Margaret promised it was only a temporary family arrangement,” Sophia said.
Claire looked toward the twins, who were beginning to wake.
“And Vanessa?”
“She claims Daniel told her you had agreed to the transfer.”
“The footage proves otherwise.”
“Yes.”
Claire lifted Nathan from his bassinet.
He opened his eyes and wrapped his tiny fingers around hers.
“What about custody?” Claire asked.
“Daniel has requested equal custody.”
For the first time that morning, Claire laughed.
It was not a happy sound.
“He has seen them once.”
“He may argue that you kept them away.”
“I have records of every unanswered message.”
Sophia nodded.
“Then we use them.”
Claire looked down at her son.
She would not allow the Hayes family to turn the twins into another possession they could claim, display, and discard.
The mansion could be repaired.
Money could be recovered.
But Noah and Nathan deserved a father who saw them as people, not symbols of his family name.
Daniel had already chosen what kind of father he wanted to be.
