Chapter 1 - The Day He Called Her Worthless

Three months earlier, Claire lay in a private hospital room with one infant sleeping against her chest and the other resting in a bassinet beside the bed.

The delivery had lasted nearly twenty hours.

She was exhausted, pale, and still shaking from the physical strain. Yet every time she looked at her sons, Noah and Nathan, she felt something powerful rise above the pain.

Daniel stood near the window, staring at his phone.

He had held each baby for less than a minute.

His mother Margaret sat in the most comfortable chair, complaining that the hospital flowers were blocking her view. Richard remained near the door, while Daniel’s younger sister, Evelyn, took photographs for the family group chat.

Claire noticed that Daniel kept turning his phone away whenever she looked at him.

“Could you bring Nathan to me?” she asked quietly.

Daniel did not move.

“Daniel?”

He sighed and placed the phone in his pocket.

“You have nurses for that.”

“I want their father to bring him.”

Margaret gave a small laugh.

“Claire, he has been here all day. Let him breathe.”

Claire looked at the clock. Daniel had arrived forty minutes earlier.

A nurse entered, sensed the tension, and gently brought Nathan from the bassinet.

When the nurse left, Daniel finally spoke.

“My mother says you are taking twelve weeks of leave.”

“My doctor recommended it.”

“And after that?”

“I return to work.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“You cannot expect Daniel to build his career while you disappear whenever the government calls.”

“I do not disappear.”

“You travel constantly,” Daniel said. “You miss dinners. You take calls at odd hours. No one even knows what you do.”

“You never asked.”

“I know enough. You sit in an office and move numbers around.”

Claire looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms.

“My work supports thousands of service members and their families.”

Daniel scoffed.

“That is exactly what I mean. Paperwork.”

Margaret nodded approvingly.

“A wife should know when her career has become an inconvenience.”

Claire had spent years ignoring remarks like that. She had convinced herself that Daniel was simply caught between his wife and his demanding family.

But something inside her changed as she held their sons.

“I will not apologize for serving my country,” she said.

Daniel stared at her.

“No one asked you to apologize. But perhaps you should admit the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That you are not the important person you pretend to be.”

The room went quiet.

Even Margaret seemed surprised by the cruelty in his voice.

Daniel continued.

“My family name opened every door you have ever walked through. You married into stability. You live in our mansion. My parents gave you a life most women would be grateful for.”

Claire could barely believe what she was hearing.

She had paid the mansion’s outstanding mortgage six years earlier. She had covered its taxes, repairs, and insurance. Daniel knew she had contributed money, but he had never bothered to learn how much.

“You think your family gave me everything?” she asked.

Daniel shrugged.

“What did you have before us? A government salary and a dead grandfather’s old investments?”

Those “old investments” had been worth more than the remaining Hayes estate.

Claire looked toward Margaret.

The older woman said nothing.

She knew the truth.

Daniel stepped closer to the bed.

“Now you have two children, and you can barely stand. You are not commanding anyone. You are not earning anything. At this moment, Claire, you are completely dependent on me.”

He lowered his voice.

“And without this family, you are worthless.”

Nathan stirred in Claire’s arms.

She held him closer.

Daniel turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Claire asked.

“I need air.”

His phone lit up before he could hide the screen.

A message appeared beneath Vanessa’s name.

Are you coming? I have waited long enough.

Claire saw it.

Daniel saw that she had seen it.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Daniel walked out.

May you like

He did not return that night.
