Chapter 8 - The Fall of Northstar’s King
Kenton attempted to fight on every front.
He claimed the signatures were authentic.
He claimed Amber had manipulated the encrypted records.
He claimed Sienna had stolen the phone and edited the recordings.
He claimed Naomi was a bitter former employee.
He even claimed Isaac had orchestrated the entire case to acquire Northstar cheaply.
But Kenton’s explanations contradicted one another.
The more he spoke, the less believable he became.
Forensic experts confirmed that Amber’s signature had been copied from an unrelated mortgage document. Server logs proved Kenton ordered the deletion of authorship records. Financial investigators traced company money into accounts controlled by Victor and Kenton.
Victor accepted a cooperation agreement.
He admitted helping falsify corporate records because Kenton had threatened to blame him for Northstar’s growing debts.
Several board members surrendered emails showing that Amber’s contributions had been intentionally removed from investor materials.
The hospital review found that Northstar had overstated Aurora Shield’s readiness.
St. Augustine permanently canceled the contract.
Without the hospital payment, Northstar could not meet its loan obligations.
Creditors moved quickly.
The board terminated Kenton and asked Amber to return as chief scientific officer.
She refused.
“I won’t return to a structure that allowed this,” she said. “The technology can continue, but the company must change completely.”
After negotiations, Northstar entered a court-supervised restructuring.
Amber recovered controlling ownership of the Aurora Shield patents. Hospitals that had supported pilot programs were protected from losses. Employees who had acted in good faith kept their jobs under new leadership.
Kenton lost his company shares because they were used to satisfy judgments and investor claims.
His penthouse was sold.
His luxury cars disappeared.
The magazines that had celebrated him published detailed timelines of Amber’s research.
One headline read:
THE INVENTOR NORTHSTAR TRIED TO ERASE
Amber did not celebrate his poverty.
Money had never been the point.
She celebrated when the patent office officially corrected the inventorship record.
For the first time, Aurora Shield displayed the name it should always have carried:
Dr. Amber Hale, Lead Inventor.
The divorce settlement was finalized shortly afterward.
Kenton was ordered to pay damages related to the forged documents, diverted marital assets, and legal misconduct. A separate criminal case remained pending.
During the final hearing, he tried one last time to speak privately with Amber.
They stood in a quiet courthouse corridor with Daniel nearby.
“I made mistakes,” Kenton said.
“You committed fraud.”
“I was under pressure.”
“You created the pressure by lying.”
“I built Northstar too.”
“Yes. You built the company. I never denied that.”
“Then why take everything?”
Amber looked at him steadily.
“I didn’t take everything. I took back what was mine.”
Kenton glanced at her belly.
“What about my daughter?”
It was the first time he had referred to the baby as anything other than an inconvenience or legal obligation.
Amber’s expression hardened.
“You had eight months to ask about her.”
“I want to be involved.”
“Then you can begin by following the court’s requirements, attending parenting evaluations, and proving that your interest lasts longer than this conversation.”
“You can’t keep her from me because you hate me.”
“This isn’t hate. It’s caution.”
Kenton’s shoulders dropped.
For once, he had no argument that could change the outcome.
Amber walked away.
