Chapter 12 - The Bride’s Final Bargain

Emergency lights flooded the hospital lobby in red.

Guests screamed.

Security ordered everyone to remain still.

Audrey dropped behind the reception desk with Sam.

Dr. Sarah shielded them.

A fire alarm began ringing.

Through the darkness, Audrey heard Victoria shouting Julian’s name.

Then a gunshot cracked.

Glass shattered above the elevators.

Audrey pressed Sam against her chest.

“East exit,” she whispered.

Sarah guided them toward the medical corridor.

Before they reached it, a woman stepped from the shadows.

She was thin, silver-haired and dressed in a gray patient uniform beneath a stolen coat.

Audrey recognized her from the archival photographs.

Caroline Vale.

Julian’s mother.

She held no weapon.

She carried a black ledger against her chest.

“Take this,” Caroline said.

Audrey froze.

Sarah moved protectively in front of her.

Caroline extended the ledger.

“They’ll kill everyone to get it.”

“Who?” Audrey asked.

“My father is dead. But the people he paid are not.”

“Richard Vale?”

Caroline’s eyes filled with terror.

“My brother believes the ledger belongs to him.”

Victoria’s father.

Audrey took the book.

It was heavier than expected.

Inside were handwritten names, patient codes and payment records spanning more than three decades.

Proof.

Caroline touched Sam’s blanket.

“He has Julian’s chin.”

Audrey stepped back.

Caroline withdrew her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For surviving too quietly.”

Footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Caroline turned.

“Go.”

Sarah led Audrey toward the east exit.

Behind them, Victoria’s voice cut through the alarm.

“Mother?”

Audrey looked back.

Victoria stood beneath an emergency light, her wedding dress torn at the hem.

She stared at Caroline.

Julian stood beside her.

His expression was unlike anything Audrey had seen before.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“Mama?” he whispered.

Caroline’s face broke.

Julian moved toward her.

Victoria blocked him.

“She is not your mother.”

Caroline looked at Victoria.

“You always knew.”

Victoria lifted her chin.

“I knew she was sick.”

“You visited me.”

“To keep you quiet.”

Julian stared at his bride.

“You knew she was alive?”

Victoria said nothing.

“You knew who I was?”

“I knew enough.”

Julian’s voice cracked.

“You let me believe my mother abandoned me.”

“You were easier to manage when you hated her.”

The sentence silenced even the alarm in Audrey’s mind.

Julian turned toward Caroline.

She reached for him.

Before their hands met, another gunshot echoed.

Caroline fell.

Blood spread across the gray fabric near her shoulder.

Richard Vale emerged from the service stairwell holding a pistol.

He wore a dark suit and an expression of complete calm.

“Give me the ledger,” he said.

Federal agents shouted from the lobby.

Richard pulled Victoria against him and pressed the weapon near her side.

For the first time, Victoria looked truly afraid.

“Dad?”

“Do not make this emotional.”

“You shot Aunt Caroline.”

“She became a liability.”

Julian moved forward.

Richard aimed at him.

“Stay back.”

Audrey stood near the east door with the ledger.

Richard looked directly at her.

“Mrs. Bennett, hand it over.”

“She’s no longer Mrs. Sterling,” Victoria said bitterly.

Richard’s grip tightened on her arm.

“No one asked you.”

Audrey looked at Caroline.

She was conscious.

Sarah pressed a hand to the wound.

The bullet appeared to have passed through her upper shoulder.

“Let Victoria go,” Audrey said.

“Give me the book.”

“Why? The federal government already has copies.”

Richard’s expression shifted.

He did not know whether she was bluffing.

Audrey lifted the ledger slightly.

“The names are digitized. The accounts are traced. Shooting anyone else only adds charges.”

“You’re lying.”

“Maybe.”

Richard aimed at Sam.

Julian lunged.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Federal agents tackled Richard.

Victoria fell to the floor.

Julian hit the marble hard as two officers pulled him back.

Audrey ran through the east door with Sarah and Caroline.

Paramedics rushed Caroline into surgery.

The power returned twelve minutes later.

Richard Vale was arrested.

Victoria was detained for questioning.

Julian sat handcuffed beside the ruined remains of his wedding flowers.

Audrey stood across from him.

Sam had stopped crying.

Julian looked at the child.

“Our son.”

Audrey’s expression hardened.

“My son.”

“I saved him.”

“You lunged at a gun after spending months denying he existed.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew there was a chance.”

Julian lowered his head.

“They told me the fertility samples had been destroyed.”

“Who?”

“Victoria.”

Audrey glanced toward the room where agents questioned the bride.

“You chose to believe the answer that benefited you.”

Julian looked up.

“Let me hold him.”

“No.”

“Audrey.”

“No.”

He leaned forward against the handcuffs.

“I lost everything.”

“You tried to take everything.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I. The difference is that I protected my child.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“What happens now?”

Audrey looked toward the ballroom.

The orchids hung above overturned chairs.

The wedding cake remained untouched.

May you like

The champagne had gone warm.

“Now,” she said, “you learn what abandonment costs.”
