Chapter 10 - The Man Beneath the Chapel

The Sterling Grand Hotel chapel had been built above a network of service tunnels left from the original Bennett complex.

Caleb discovered the tunnels on archived construction plans.

One passage connected the chapel basement to an underground records vault.

Another led beneath the parking structure and emerged near the river.

Federal agents believed Marcus might be held somewhere inside the network.

The wedding was four days away.

Waiting was no longer an option.

Ortiz obtained a limited search warrant for the publicly registered storage areas, but the hidden sections did not appear on modern property records.

Audrey remembered a brass access plate in her grandfather’s office.

She drew it from memory.

Caleb found the symbol on an old engineering map.

A circle divided by seven lines.

The Lumen emblem.

At midnight, Ortiz led a small team into the tunnels.

Audrey remained in a surveillance vehicle across the street.

She had promised Sarah she would not enter the building.

For twenty minutes, the agents found nothing.

Then Caleb’s voice came through the radio.

“We located a sealed door.”

Metal groaned.

Static followed.

Then Ortiz spoke.

“There’s blood.”

Audrey gripped the edge of the monitor.

“Is Marcus there?”

No answer.

The camera feed moved through a narrow room.

A chair stood beneath a hanging light.

Ropes lay on the floor.

A dark stain spread across the concrete.

On the wall, someone had carved numbers.

3 1 7 0 0 1.

Room 317.

Patient 001.

Julian.

A second doorway led into the old records vault.

Most shelves were empty.

One locked cabinet remained.

Inside were wedding contracts, Vale investment documents and a handwritten transfer schedule.

The original ledger would be moved on the wedding day at 2:15 p.m.

The ceremony began at 2:00.

“They’re using the wedding as cover,” Audrey said.

Ortiz agreed.

“Hotel security will be focused on the ballroom. Delivery vehicles will move freely.”

“Where is the ledger going?”

The transfer schedule listed only one destination code.

CROWN.

Caleb searched corporate records.

Vale Capital owned a private aircraft named Crown Meridian.

Its flight plan showed a departure from a regional airport at 3:10 p.m., bound for Switzerland.

They had less than an hour after the scheduled ledger movement.

Ortiz sent agents to monitor the airport.

Then one of her team members called from deeper inside the tunnel.

“We found someone.”

The camera turned.

Marcus lay behind a utility door.

His face was bruised.

One arm bent at an unnatural angle.

But he was alive.

Paramedics rushed him to St. Catherine’s.

Audrey waited outside the operating room.

At four in the morning, Marcus regained consciousness.

His first word was not Julian.

It was Caroline.

Audrey entered the room with Ortiz.

Marcus could barely speak.

“Caroline Vale is alive,” he whispered.

Audrey stopped beside the bed.

“Julian’s mother?”

Marcus nodded.

“Where?”

“Private care facility. Vale-owned. Different name.”

“Why is she important?”

“She has the original ledger.”

“But the schedule says it will be moved from the hotel.”

“It’s a copy.”

Ortiz leaned closer.

“Where is Caroline?”

Marcus’s monitor began to beep faster.

“Silver Pines.”

Caleb searched the name.

Silver Pines was a psychiatric care facility in northern Connecticut. It had operated under several corporate owners, all connected to Vale interests.

“Why would she have the ledger?” Audrey asked.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Insurance.”

“Against Conrad?”

“Against everyone.”

“Did Julian know she was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Did Victoria?”

Marcus opened his eyes again.

“She visits her.”

Audrey’s stomach tightened.

Julian was preparing to marry the granddaughter of the man who had abused his mother.

Victoria knew the truth.

Perhaps that was the source of her obsession with controlling him.

“Who attacked you?” Ortiz asked.

Marcus stared at the ceiling.

“Not Julian.”

“Victoria?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

His breathing became shallow.

“Her father.”

“Richard Vale?”

Marcus nodded.

Victoria’s father had always remained behind the scenes. He rarely appeared in public and allowed his daughter to become the visible face of the family.

Marcus whispered one more sentence.

“Richard is moving the real ledger tonight.”

Ortiz immediately ordered agents toward Silver Pines.

But when they arrived, Caroline Vale was gone.

Her room had been cleaned.

The security recordings had been erased.

A nurse was found unconscious in a supply closet.

On Caroline’s pillow rested a wedding program.

Across Julian and Victoria’s names, someone had drawn the Lumen emblem in red ink.
