Chapter 5 - A Father Who Had Been WatchingNathan reached Fairfax County shortly after midnight.

While Captain Reed’s officers surrounded the mansion, Nathan stopped at a state police command vehicle parked half a mile from the property.

Colonel Adrian Brooks, an old colleague, met him inside.

“We recovered the emergency transmission,” Brooks said.

He played the audio.

Emma’s whisper came first.

Then Daniel’s command.

Then Vivian’s mention of an injection.

Nathan listened without moving.

Brooks studied his face.

“You need to stay outside the operational perimeter.”

“That’s my daughter in there.”

“And if you enter without coordination, Mercer’s attorneys will claim the search was influenced by your position.”

Nathan knew Brooks was right.

Years earlier, he had built cases against men who believed rules applied only to their enemies. He could not become one of them now.

“What do you need?”

“Probable cause beyond the call.”

Nathan opened his leather case.

For six months, he had quietly collected records.

He showed Brooks changes to Emma’s foundation accounts, canceled meetings, altered board schedules, and medical documents submitted without Emma’s authorization.

Brooks raised an eyebrow.

“You suspected something.”

“I suspected financial coercion. I didn’t know how far it had gone.”

“Why didn’t you confront them?”

“Because Emma asked me not to interfere.”

Nathan looked through the rain toward the distant mansion.

“I thought respecting her marriage meant waiting for her to ask for help.”

Brooks closed the folder.

“She asked tonight.”

“Yes.”

A technician entered.

“We traced a second device inside the house. It connected to an encrypted archive before going offline.”

“The black phone,” Nathan said.

The technician nodded.

“We received fragments of several files. Enough to confirm threats and possible unlawful confinement.”

Brooks issued the request for an emergency search warrant.

Within minutes, a judge approved it.

Nathan was allowed to accompany the command unit to the front gate but was ordered to remain behind the officers until Emma was located.

The gate opened before they forced it.

Claire stood on the other side.

Her lip was split, and one sleeve was torn, but she held herself upright.

“Emma is upstairs,” she said. “Daniel took her to the east bedroom. Mother told the staff she was having a psychiatric episode.”

“Where’s the evidence phone?” Brooks asked.

“In the study wall. I put it back before Daniel found me.”

“Can you show us?”

Claire looked toward the mansion.

“If my mother sees me helping you, she’ll destroy me.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“No, she won’t.”

Claire gave a bitter laugh.

“You don’t know her.”

Nathan removed his coat and placed it around Claire’s shoulders.

“I know people who survive by convincing everyone else they are untouchable.”

“What happens when they’re touched?”

“They discover how alone they really are.”

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

Then she gave Captain Reed the silver key.

“She keeps forged medical records in the second-floor office. The sedatives are in the locked cabinet beside them. Daniel’s laptop contains the guardianship petition.”

Reed signaled to his officers.

As they moved toward the house, a scream came from inside.

Nathan forgot every order he had been given.

He ran.
