Chapter 3 - The Documents on the TableThe final conflict began with a folder.

Vivian placed it on the breakfast table beside Emma’s tea.

The cover displayed the name of the Cole Foundation.

Emma opened it and found a proposal appointing Daniel as chief financial officer and Vivian as permanent chairwoman of the board.

The final page transferred emergency voting authority to the Mercer Family Trust.

Emma looked up.

“What is this?”

“A practical solution,” Vivian said. “The foundation has become too demanding for you.”

“I manage it successfully.”

Daniel entered the room, adjusting his cuff links.

“You used to manage it successfully.”

Emma’s hands tightened around the folder.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel placed a printed medical assessment on the table. It claimed Emma suffered from severe anxiety, impaired judgment, and emotional instability.

The doctor’s signature belonged to a Mercer family associate.

“I’ve never met this doctor,” Emma said.

“You spoke to him during the gala,” Vivian replied.

“For five minutes.”

“That was enough for him to observe concerning behavior.”

Emma stood.

“You’re trying to declare me incompetent.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“We’re trying to protect your mother’s legacy.”

“My mother’s legacy has nothing to do with you.”

The room changed.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Vivian stopped pretending to smile.

“You live in our home,” she said. “You benefit from our name, our staff, and our protection. Yet you continue behaving as though you owe us nothing.”

“I’m leaving.”

Emma walked toward the door.

Daniel blocked her path.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

He grabbed her wrist.

Emma pulled away and knocked a cup from the table. It shattered on the floor.

The sound brought Claire into the hallway.

Daniel released Emma immediately.

Claire was thirty-six and had lived at the mansion since her own marriage ended. She rarely challenged Vivian. Most people believed she was weak.

Emma had begun to suspect something else.

Claire was afraid.

Vivian gestured toward the broken cup.

“Look at what you’ve done.”

Emma stared at Daniel.

“He grabbed me.”

Daniel laughed.

“You lost your balance.”

Claire said nothing, but her eyes dropped to Emma’s wrist.

A dark mark was already forming.

Emma left the dining room and went upstairs. Daniel followed ten minutes later carrying the folder.

He locked the bedroom door.

“You embarrassed me.”

“You tried to steal my foundation.”

“I am your husband.”

“That doesn’t make you my owner.”

His hand struck the wall beside her head.

Emma flinched.

Daniel smiled when he saw it.

“You’re becoming dramatic, just like my sister.”

That sentence stayed with Emma.

Later that evening, she found Claire in the laundry room.

“What happened during your marriage?” Emma asked.

Claire froze.

“Nothing.”

“Daniel said I was becoming like you.”

Claire folded a towel that was already folded.

“My husband left.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother convinced him I was unstable.”

Emma’s breath caught.

Claire continued quietly.

“She used the same doctor. The same kind of report. She gained control of my inheritance while I was in a private treatment center.”

“Were you ill?”

“I was grieving. My husband had been unfaithful, and Mother used my grief as proof that I could not manage my own life.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

Claire looked toward the security camera above the laundry room door.

“Because evidence disappears in this house.”

Emma glanced at the camera.

“Then we’ll create evidence they can’t reach.”

For the first time, Claire looked directly at her.

“How?”

May you like

Emma touched the powerless pendant around her neck.

“My father taught me that every secure system has a second entrance.”
