Chapter 14 - The Real Meeting Begins

The melody moved through the ballroom.
Anna stood hidden inside the medical transfer area, listening through an earpiece.
For one dangerous second, her vision blurred.
Then she heard Evelyn’s voice through the secure channel.
“You choose the door.”
Anna breathed slowly.
“I choose the door.”
The blackout command rose inside her like an old reflex.
She resisted it.
Across the ballroom, Roland watched Evelyn and Vanessa approach.
He wore a black tuxedo and a white rose.
The same flower Richard had worn at his wedding.
Evelyn wondered whether the choice was deliberate.
Roland kissed her cheek.
“You look well,” he said.
“Disappointed?”
“Surprised.”
Vanessa stood beside them.
Roland’s gaze moved to her.
“Are we prepared?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Completely.”
The gala proceeded through speeches, awards, and carefully staged memories of Merrick Global’s history.
Evelyn watched the compromised directors gather near the stage.
Miriam Cole avoided her eyes.
Harlan Voss drank too quickly.
Senator Halden sat beside Roland with the calm expression of a man who believed law was something purchased by the hour.
Naomi’s agents waited among the guests.
Jonathan monitored the secondary security system.
Lydia listened from the protected hospital.
Marcus Vale prepared to transmit the Lattice evidence to independent journalists if the operation failed.
At nine forty-five, Roland took the stage.
“For more than three decades,” he said, “Evelyn Merrick has guided this company with uncommon determination.”
Applause filled the ballroom.
Evelyn smiled for the cameras.
“Tonight,” Roland continued, “we look toward a new generation.”
Vanessa walked to the champagne table.
A disguised agent handed her the prepared glass.
The harmless solution waited inside.
Vanessa carried it toward her mother.
Her hand did not shake.
“To the future of Merrick Global,” she said.
Evelyn accepted the glass.
“To the future.”
She drank.
The bitter flavor touched her tongue.
For one terrifying moment, Evelyn wondered whether the vial had been switched again.
Then Vanessa whispered, “It’s safe.”
Evelyn let the glass fall.
It shattered.
She clutched her throat.
The ballroom erupted in gasps.
She collapsed to her knees.
Vanessa grabbed another flute and poured champagne over her face.
The humiliation was part of the performance.
But when Vanessa pinned her wrists to the floor, tears filled her eyes.
“Die already,” she said. “The CEO chair is finally mine.”
Evelyn went still.
Roland pressed the button.
The doors locked.
Vanessa rose and addressed the crowd.
“Nobody leaves. My mother is finished.”
Harlan Voss applauded.
Miriam joined him.
Then five other directors.
Evelyn counted every person who revealed themselves.
Roland approached the stage.
“With the tragic incapacitation of our chief executive, the emergency succession provision grants this board the authority to appoint an interim leader.”
Vanessa faced the directors.
“Call the vote.”
Roland began naming them.
Harlan voted for Vanessa.
Miriam voted for Vanessa.
Each answer became evidence.
Senator Halden whispered to an aide.
The aide moved toward a side exit and found it locked.
Roland smiled.
“Eight votes. The resolution passes.”
Vanessa looked down at Evelyn.
For a moment, the entire plan balanced on silence.
Then Evelyn raised her head.
“You should have checked who locked those doors first.”
She slowly stood.
The room fell silent.
Roland pressed his button again.
Nothing happened.
The red security lights came on.
Evelyn wiped the champagne from her face.
“The emergency succession vote is invalid,” she announced. “Every supporting director has been recorded participating in a criminal conspiracy.”
The ballroom screens activated.
Footage from Ashcombe appeared.
Then the offshore transfers.
The forged medical report.
The replacement plan.
Roland’s discussion beneath the ballroom.
Guests shouted.
Journalists lifted cameras.
The doors burst open.
Federal agents entered.
“Nobody move!”
Naomi crossed the ballroom with an arrest warrant.
Roland stepped backward.
Senator Halden attempted to reach the service corridor.
Two agents stopped him.
Harlan Voss dropped his phone into a champagne bucket.
Miriam began crying.
Naomi approached Vanessa first.
“Vanessa Merrick, you are under arrest.”
Vanessa held out her hands.
Roland stared at her.
“You betrayed us.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“No. I finally stopped betraying myself.”
The handcuffs closed around her wrists.
Naomi turned toward Roland.
Before she reached him, Moon River began playing again.
The sound came from the ballroom speakers.
Louder than before.
Anna gasped inside the transfer area.
The blackout command struck with full force.
Her hand moved toward the emergency control.
“I choose the door,” she whispered.
The command repeated inside her mind.
Darkness is safety.
Open the corridor.
Retrieve the target.
Assume the role.
Anna forced her hand away from the switch.
Then a second voice entered the speaker system.
Richard Merrick’s recorded voice.
“Subject V, initiate final succession.”
Anna froze.
The ballroom lights went out.
People screamed.
A gunshot came from the stage.
Emergency lights flashed.
Roland dropped beside the podium with a wound across his shoulder.
Adrian Cross emerged from beneath the stage and seized Evelyn.
He pulled her toward the west service corridor.
Naomi fired, but Cross used Evelyn as a shield.
Vanessa threw herself against Cross.
He struck her and sent her into a table.
Evelyn drove her elbow into his ribs.
His grip loosened.
She twisted free.
Cross fired toward the ceiling, creating panic, then ran through the kitchen.
Agents pursued him.
Roland crawled toward the opposite corridor.
Senator Halden shouted that he needed medical help.
Naomi ordered agents to secure every suspect.
The lights stabilized.
Vanessa lay beside the overturned table, blood on her forehead.
Evelyn rushed to her.
“I’m fine,” Vanessa said.
“You’re bleeding.”
“So are you.”
The gunshot had grazed Evelyn’s upper arm.
Naomi shouted into her radio.
“Cross is heading toward the medical transfer bay.”
Anna heard the warning.
The activation command still echoed inside her mind.
She entered the corridor.
Cross appeared around the corner.
He looked at her face and smiled.
“Subject V.”
“My name is Anna.”
“Your name is irrelevant. Open the transfer exit.”
Anna stood before the control panel.
Cross raised his weapon.
“Do it.”
The music continued through the corridor speakers.
Anna entered the code.
The exit opened.
Cross motioned her through.
A covered medical chair waited beside a black vehicle.
“Where is the target?” he demanded.
Anna looked toward the ballroom.
Then she smiled in Evelyn’s exact manner.
“I am the target.”
Cross realized the mistake too late.
Anna struck his wrist against the metal chair.
The weapon fell.
He punched her across the face.
She collapsed.
Cross reached for the gun.
Jonathan emerged from behind the vehicle and kicked it away.
Cross drew a knife.
He slashed Jonathan’s arm and ran toward the loading dock.
Naomi’s agents blocked the exit.
Cross turned back.
Anna stood behind him holding the fallen weapon.
“Don’t,” Naomi shouted.
Cross lunged.
Anna fired once.
The bullet struck his thigh.
He fell.
Agents surrounded him.
Naomi handcuffed Cross herself.
Inside the ballroom, Roland sat beneath federal guard.
Evelyn approached him with Vanessa beside her.
Roland looked at them and laughed.
“You think this ends Meridian?”
“No,” Evelyn said. “It ends you.”
“You still don’t understand. Richard was selected because your father resisted. Vanessa was selected because you resisted. There is always another person ready.”
“Not anymore.”
Roland glanced toward Anna as agents escorted her into the ballroom.
His expression changed.
“You broke the command.”
Anna touched the blood at the corner of her mouth.
“I chose the door.”
Roland’s smile disappeared.
Naomi read him his rights.
As agents lifted him, he leaned toward Evelyn.
“You should ask Lydia why Richard chose St. Catherine’s.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Roland smiled again.
“Ask her who delivered the first child.”
Agents dragged him away.
The arrests continued until midnight.
Eleven directors were detained.
Senator Halden was removed through the front entrance in handcuffs while cameras recorded every step.
Vanessa was taken in a separate vehicle after signing an initial cooperation agreement.
Before entering, she looked at Evelyn.
“Will you come tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“You promise?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa nodded and entered the vehicle.
The door closed.
Evelyn stood beneath the hotel awning as rain fell beyond the police barricades.
Naomi approached.
“We did it.”
Evelyn watched the vehicle carrying her daughter disappear into traffic.
“We survived it.”
“That counts.”
Jonathan emerged with his arm bandaged.
Anna walked beside him.
For the first time, she wore clothing she had selected herself.
A simple blue coat.
No imitation.
No black gown.
Evelyn looked at her.
“What happens now?”
Anna considered the question.
“I choose a name.”
“Anna?”
“Maybe.”
Lydia called from the hospital.
Evelyn answered.
“Roland said I should ask who delivered the first child.”
Silence followed.
“Lydia?”
Her sister’s breathing changed.
“Come to the hospital,” Lydia said. “There is something I should have told you before the gala.”
May you like
“What?”
“It is about our mother.”
