Chapter 12 - The Choice Vanessa Made

Evelyn wanted to send every available agent into Vanessa’s building.
Naomi stopped her.
“The footage is delayed.”
“How delayed?”
“Twenty-three minutes.”
“Then trace the vehicle.”
“Traffic cameras show three identical vehicles leaving in different directions.”
Anna watched silently from the window.
“Roland will keep Vanessa inside the hotel,” she said.
“Why?” Evelyn asked.
“He needs her visible before the gala. Guests will notice if she arrives under guard.”
“He could drug her.”
“No. Her behavior must appear normal.”
Jonathan searched hotel access logs.
A private elevator had been activated in the presidential wing at 1:04 a.m.
The reservation belonged to Senator Halden.
Naomi sent two undercover agents to the floor.
They found the suite empty.
A catering cart remained in the corridor.
Inside was Vanessa’s bracelet.
Evelyn recognized it immediately.
She had given it to Vanessa on her eighteenth birthday.
A tiny piece of paper was folded inside the clasp.
18-4-12.
“Is that a code?” Naomi asked.
Evelyn knew the answer.
When Vanessa was eight, they created a number system for playing treasure hunts in the penthouse.
Numbers represented letters.
18-4-12 translated to RDL.
Red door, lower level.
“There’s a red service door near the hotel laundry,” Jonathan said.
Agents searched the area.
Behind the door, they found an old access tunnel.
It led to a locked room directly beneath the ballroom stage.
Vanessa sat inside with her hands restrained.
Adrian Cross stood behind her holding a weapon.
Roland watched through a video connection displayed on a wall monitor.
Naomi’s agents could not enter without risking Vanessa’s life.
Evelyn activated the room’s old intercom.
“Roland.”
His face appeared on the monitor.
He smiled.
“I knew you would find her.”
“Release Vanessa.”
“After the gala.”
“You need her cooperation.”
“I need her appearance. Cooperation is optional.”
Cross placed the weapon against Vanessa’s head.
Vanessa looked toward the intercom camera.
Her eyes were red but focused.
“Mother, don’t cancel the event.”
Roland struck her across the face.
“Speak only when instructed.”
Evelyn’s entire body went cold.
“You touch her again,” she said, “and I release Ledger Seven to every newspaper in the country.”
Roland’s smile vanished.
“You don’t have it.”
“Richard approached me through a supplier. Meridian selected him because I rejected my father’s lenders. Subject V was activated for Halston after age fifty-five.”
Roland stared at the camera.
Cross shifted his stance.
Evelyn continued.
“Should I read Senator Halden’s section next?”
Roland muted the room.
Naomi moved beside Evelyn.
“You bought us time.”
“Can your agents breach?”
“Cross is positioned behind reinforced glass. The room has a secondary exit.”
Anna examined the hotel plans.
“This tunnel connects to the medical transfer bay.”
“The same route planned for Evelyn,” Jonathan said.
Anna looked at Evelyn.
“Roland wants us to attempt a rescue.”
“It’s a diversion,” Naomi agreed.
“He expects us to expose our agents before the gala.”
Evelyn reopened the intercom.
Roland returned to the screen.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“You attend the gala. You drink from the glass Vanessa gives you. You make no public accusations before the respiratory event.”
“And after?”
“After, you will receive exceptional medical care.”
“You mean imprisonment.”
“You always were difficult to reassure.”
“Release Vanessa before I enter the ballroom.”
“No.”
“Then the ledger goes public.”
“If I fail to report at nine tomorrow evening, automatic files will prove your daughter committed murder, fraud, and treason.”
“She committed enough without your fabrication.”
Vanessa flinched.
Evelyn saw it.
Roland also saw.
“You hear that?” he asked Vanessa. “Your mother has already abandoned you.”
Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.
“No. I stopped lying to her.”
Vanessa looked up.
Evelyn continued.
“You are responsible for the people you hurt. You are also responsible for what you do next. I cannot erase your crimes. I can stand beside you while you tell the truth.”
Roland laughed.
“Very moving.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“Vanessa, look at me.”
Her daughter did.
“You were never required to become him to survive him.”
Vanessa’s mouth trembled.
Cross tightened his grip on the weapon.
Evelyn said, “At the gala, I will drink from your glass.”
Naomi turned sharply.
Roland smiled again.
“Excellent.”
“But understand this,” Evelyn added. “If you harm her before then, I destroy everything Meridian built inside Merrick Global.”
“You would destroy your father’s company?”
“I would burn the name from every building before allowing you to own it.”
Roland knew she meant it.
The connection ended.
Naomi seized Evelyn’s arm.
“You cannot promise to drink an unverified glass.”
“We control the catering refrigerator.”
“Roland may change the method.”
“Then we adapt.”
Anna remained focused on the tunnel plans.
“There is another way into Vanessa’s room.”
“Where?” Jonathan asked.
“The ventilation shaft.”
Naomi examined it.
“Too narrow for an adult.”
Anna pointed toward an adjoining maintenance closet.
“The wall was added after the hotel renovation. It’s hollow.”
Agents drilled a tiny opening and inserted a fiber camera.
Cross stood with his back toward the false wall.
Naomi prepared a breach team.
Evelyn watched the monitor.
Three agents entered through the maintenance closet.
The first fired a nonlethal round into Cross’s shoulder.
Vanessa dropped to the floor.
Cross spun and shot through the wall.
An agent fell.
Naomi’s team returned fire.
Cross escaped through the secondary tunnel.
The monitor carrying Roland’s image went dark.
Agents cut Vanessa free.
Evelyn ran into the room.
Vanessa stood unsteadily.
For a moment, mother and daughter faced each other without speaking.
Then Vanessa slapped Evelyn.
The sound echoed against the tiled walls.
Naomi raised her weapon instinctively.
Evelyn lifted one hand.
Vanessa’s face twisted with rage and grief.
“You let them keep me here.”
“I got you out.”
“You could have surrendered the ledger.”
“And then Roland would kill both of us.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I heard his plan.”
Evelyn played the recording Anna had captured.
Vanessa listened to Roland discuss her staged overdose.
Her anger slowly disappeared.
When the recording ended, she sat on the floor.
“He said I would become chief executive.”
“For six months.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
It sounded broken.
“All this time, I thought I was using him.”
Evelyn crouched beside her.
“He made everyone believe that.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Who recorded this?”
Anna stepped into the room.
Vanessa stared at the woman wearing her mother’s face.
“What is that?”
“My name is Anna,” she said. “For now.”
Vanessa backed against the wall.
“The replacement.”
“Yes.”
“You’re real.”
“Unfortunately.”
Vanessa looked from Anna to Evelyn.
“What happens now?”
“You testify,” Naomi said. “You cooperate fully. You help us expose the board.”
“And then prison.”
“Likely.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
Evelyn waited.
She could not make the choice for her.
Finally, Vanessa stood.
“What do you need me to do?”
Naomi explained the gala plan.
Vanessa would appear to administer the poison and initiate the succession vote. She would pressure the compromised directors to reveal their support.
Then Evelyn would rise.
Federal agents would enter.
Roland and the directors would be arrested.
Vanessa listened without interrupting.
“What about Cross?”
“We track him through the medical transfer route,” Naomi said.
“And Senator Halden?”
“His arrest team moves when the ballroom evidence is displayed.”
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“You really plan to collapse in front of everyone?”
“Yes.”
“You were never good at acting.”
“I was Lady Macbeth.”
“You forgot half your lines.”
“I was seventeen.”
Despite everything, Vanessa almost smiled.
Then her expression became serious.
“There’s something you don’t know.”
“What?”
“Roland doesn’t control the ballroom lights.”
“Who does?”
Vanessa looked at Anna.
“She does.”
Anna frowned.
“I have no access.”
“Not consciously,” Vanessa said. “They embedded emergency commands during your conditioning. Certain sounds trigger responses.”
“What sounds?”
“The music box.”
Moon River.
Evelyn remembered the anonymous calls.
The music at her penthouse.
Someone had been testing Anna’s conditioning.
“Who has the activation recording?” Naomi asked.
May you like
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Lydia.”
