Chapter 8 - The Name on the Warrant

Callie woke in the hospital shortly after midnight.

Her first sight was the yellow blanket with white stars folded across the chair beside her bed.

Her second was her father sleeping beneath the window.

“Dad?”

Thomas woke immediately.

He came to her bedside.

“You’re safe.”

Callie looked around the room.

“Where is Simon?”

“In custody.”

“Meredith?”

“Also in custody.”

Callie closed her eyes.

For several seconds, Thomas feared she was going to cry.

Instead, she whispered, “Is it really over?”

“The immediate danger is over. The rest will take time.”

“I gave Ana the drive.”

“I know.”

“What was in the sealed file?”

Thomas explained the warrants, protection orders, asset freezes, and evidence collected by the investigation.

Callie listened in silence.

“You knew all of this?”

“Not all of it.”

“You never told me who you were.”

Thomas sat beside her.

“I wanted you to have a normal life. After your mother died, I left the bureau because one case brought threats too close to our home. I removed my name from public biographies and stayed away from political work.”

“Simon thought you were powerless.”

“I allowed him to think that.”

Callie turned toward the window.

“Did you use your old position to get him arrested?”

“No.”

She looked back at him.

“Evidence got him arrested. Your courage provided much of that evidence.”

“I stayed for years.”

“Survival is not a straight road.”

“I lied to you.”

“You were afraid.”

“I defended him.”

“You were trying to make sense of something that did not make sense.”

Callie’s voice broke.

“I should have left the first time.”

Thomas took her hand.

“The responsibility belongs to the person who chose to hurt you. Not to the person who needed time to escape.”

Tears moved down Callie’s face.

Thomas remained beside her without rushing the silence.

The following morning, Ana arrived with news.

The drive contained more than photographs.

Callie had unknowingly copied Simon’s automatic backup archive, including emails between Simon, Meredith, Dr. Hale, company attorneys, and several officials.

The messages proved that Simon planned to declare Callie mentally incompetent, transfer all property bearing her name, and place her under private medical supervision.

Dr. Hale had already prepared the commitment documents.

They intended to remove her legal freedom within a week.

Callie stared at Ana.

“Easter was the deadline.”

“Yes,” Ana said. “We believe Simon invited your father because he planned to provoke him. If Thomas reacted violently, they could describe both of you as unstable.”

Thomas looked down.

Callie squeezed his hand.

“You didn’t give them what they wanted.”

“No.”

Ana continued.

“We also found recordings from Meredith’s office. She discussed payments connected to three witnesses. All three are alive, and two have agreed to testify.”

“What happens now?” Callie asked.

“You receive protection. Your accounts will be separated from the Vale assets. The court has already suspended Simon’s control over the companies in your name.”

“And Hawthorne Mansion?”

“It may be seized as part of the financial case.”

Callie felt no sadness.

The mansion had never been a home.

It had been a beautiful cage.

Ana placed a card on the bedside table.

“The number on this card reaches me directly. Not my office. Me.”

Callie nodded.

After Ana left, Thomas stood by the window.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For what?”

“For not seeing everything sooner.”

Callie looked at the yellow blanket.

“You saw enough to keep the door open.”

Thomas turned toward her.

“That was all I could do until you chose to walk through it.”

Callie reached for his hand again.

May you like

“I’m ready now.”
