Chapter 7 - He Hurt Me Again

Thomas reached Callie before anyone else.

She was unconscious but breathing.

“Callie?”

He touched her shoulder gently.

Her eyelids moved.

“Dad…”

“I’m here.”

Her fingers found his sleeve.

“He hurt me again.”

The words were weak, but they were clear.

Bailey.

This was the signal Thomas had promised he would never ignore.

Simon remained behind them.

“She fell. Take her and leave.”

Thomas checked Callie’s pulse.

Meredith approached, holding her glass as though the afternoon had merely become inconvenient.

“Go back to your lonely little house,” she said.

Thomas took out his phone.

“This is Miller. Send the full team—and bring the sealed file.”

When the sirens began, Simon first tried to laugh.

“You called the local police? My family funds half their department.”

Thomas placed his jacket beneath Callie’s head.

“You should not assume every institution can be purchased.”

Vehicles surrounded the mansion.

State police entered through the front doors. Federal investigators moved toward the offices and security room. Emergency medical personnel hurried to Callie.

Ana Ruiz came in carrying a red sealed envelope.

Two U.S. marshals followed her.

Meredith’s wine glass fell and shattered.

Ana opened the envelope and faced Simon.

“Simon Vale, this property is subject to federal and state search warrants. You are ordered not to interfere with the collection of evidence.”

Simon stared at Thomas.

“You’re a retired clerk.”

Ana looked at him.

“Thomas Miller was the director of the Virginia Bureau of Special Investigations.”

The room became silent.

“He led the task force that dismantled the Carroway corruption network,” she continued. “He also trained half the senior investigators entering your property.”

Simon’s face turned pale.

Meredith attempted to recover her authority.

“This is outrageous. I know the governor.”

Ana handed her a separate document.

“Then you may call the governor after counsel arrives. Your phones are being collected under the warrant.”

Paramedics lifted Callie onto a stretcher.

Thomas remained beside her.

Before they carried her out, Callie opened her hand.

The silver drive was still inside it.

Ana took an evidence bag from her pocket.

“May I?”

Callie looked at her father.

Thomas nodded.

“You decide,” he said.

Callie placed the drive into the bag herself.

Simon stepped forward.

“That belongs to my company.”

A marshal blocked him.

Callie looked at Simon from the stretcher.

“No,” she said. “It belongs to the people you stole from.”

Outside, the Easter guests watched in stunned silence as officers entered every wing of the mansion.

Investigators opened Simon’s office, the accounting room, Meredith’s private study, and a hidden records vault behind the library.

Inside the vault, they discovered boxes of contracts waiting to be destroyed.

The security team found that the mansion’s cameras had been disabled thirty seconds before Callie fell.

But Simon had forgotten about the smart camera built into the nursery monitor in the adjoining room. It had recorded sound through the open doorway.

The audio captured Simon demanding the drive.

It captured Callie refusing.

It captured Simon threatening Thomas.

And it captured the moment Callie cried out.

Simon was taken into custody before sunset.

Meredith was arrested after investigators found her attempting to remove a small ledger from the fireplace.

As officers escorted her across the marble foyer, she turned toward Thomas.

“You destroyed this family.”

Thomas stood beside the stretcher.

“No,” he replied. “You trained your family to destroy everyone else.”

Then he followed Callie to the hospital.

May you like

He never looked back at Hawthorne Mansion.
