Chapter 9 - The Apology
Larry’s case was resolved two months later.
He accepted responsibility, paid a fine, completed community service, and enrolled in a court-approved anger management program. He also agreed to pay Charlotte’s medical and legal expenses connected to the incident.
Charlotte did not attend the final hearing.
Larry respected the order preventing direct contact. Instead, he wrote a letter and gave it to his attorney.
Charlotte read it in the same black leather chair where she had been sitting on the day of the confrontation.
I am sorry for striking you.
I will not call it an accident because my arm did what my anger told it to do. I will not call it a misunderstanding because confusion did not force me to enter your office or ignore your warning.
You protected my sister when I refused to listen to her.
You also helped save the buildings I claimed to be protecting.
I do not expect forgiveness. I only want you to know that I understand the difference between regret and responsibility now.
Charlotte folded the letter.
Mr. Newburger stood near the window.
“Do you believe him?”
“I believe he finally understands the sentence you said.”
“What sentence?”
Charlotte looked toward the wooden table.
“You acted before hearing the truth.”
A week later, Charlotte sent a reply through Larry’s attorney.
It contained only two sentences.

Larry carried those words in his wallet.
