LARRY MISUNDERSTOOD

Six months earlier, Larry and Bethany had stood beside their mother’s hospital bed.

Eleanor Cooper had once been the most energetic woman in their neighborhood. She had purchased her first apartment building with money saved from working two jobs. Over thirty years, she turned one building into four.

The properties were not luxurious, but they were clean, affordable, and filled with families who trusted her.

Eleanor remembered every child’s birthday. She delivered groceries to elderly tenants. When someone lost a job, she gave them time instead of sending an eviction notice.

To Bethany, the buildings represented their mother’s kindness.

To Larry, they represented survival.

Larry had left school at nineteen to help manage repairs. He worked weekends, answered emergency calls at midnight, and learned how to repair broken pipes, damaged roofs, and old electrical systems.

Bethany had gone to college.

Larry never blamed her openly, but a quiet resentment grew inside him.

On the final night of Eleanor’s life, she held both their hands.

“Promise me you will protect each other,” she whispered.

Bethany nodded through her tears.

Larry leaned closer.

“I promise.”

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“Protecting someone does not mean controlling them.”

Larry’s expression tightened.

“I understand.”

But he did not.

After Eleanor died, her will divided the properties equally between them. Each sibling owned fifty percent. Major financial decisions required both signatures.

For several months, the arrangement worked.

Larry handled maintenance and collected rent. Bethany reviewed tenant complaints and financial records.

Then Victor Sloane appeared.

Victor was a financial consultant with an expensive watch, a polished smile, and an answer for every problem.

He told Larry that the buildings were losing value.

He said major investors were buying properties throughout the area.

“If you don’t move quickly,” Victor warned, “you’ll lose everything your mother built.”
