Chapter 11 - The Confession Beneath the White Flowers

Saint Michael’s Chapel remained closed after the disrupted funeral.

The white flowers had begun to wilt, but Daniel’s coffin was still positioned beneath his portrait. The military had delayed burial while investigators reviewed the new allegations.

Claire entered through the side corridor with Captain Snow in her arms.

Noah, Shaw, and federal agents watched through concealed cameras. Emma remained at the protected residence with Lila and General Ward.

Claire hated leaving her daughter, but Voss had insisted that she come alone.

He stepped from behind the front pew.

His uniform was gone. He wore a dark suit and carried a small metal case.

“You look disappointed to see me alive,” he said.

“I will be disappointed until you are behind a locked door.”

“That may still happen.”

“Then why are you here?”

Voss approached the coffin.

“Because Thomas Arden intends to erase every Guardian Shepherd record at midnight.”

“You helped him.”

“For twenty-two years.”

Claire forced herself to remain still.

“Did you cause Daniel’s crash?”

“I authorized the altered flight plan. Arden ordered the transport intercepted.”

“Daniel was alive at Winter Shelter 6.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Voss looked at Daniel’s portrait.

“He refused to reveal where he sent the audit.”

“And?”

“Arden ordered the shelter destroyed.”

Claire’s eyes burned, but she would not allow Voss to see her break.

“Was Daniel inside?”

“I left before the final order was carried out.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only honest answer I have.”

Voss placed the metal case on the front pew.

Inside was a black authorization device.

“The financial key,” he said. “Without it, Arden cannot trigger Whiteout.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because he sent people to kill me before I could be questioned.”

“You expected loyalty from him?”

“I expected self-preservation. I underestimated how easily he could replace me.”

Claire looked toward the white flowers surrounding the coffin.

“Where is Daniel’s archive?”

“Inside the funeral arrangement.”

Voss removed three white lilies from a silver stand. Beneath them was a small optical transmitter.

Claire recognized the design from the memorial archive.

“Daniel placed it here?”

“No. I did.”

“Why?”

“Three days before his transport disappeared, Daniel confronted me in this chapel. He knew the Guardian Fund records were being altered. He gave me a choice.”

“To confess?”

“To help him expose Arden.”

“You refused.”

“I asked for time.”

“And while you were thinking, he died.”

Voss looked down.

“I told Arden that Daniel had discovered the network.”

Claire felt a surge of anger so powerful that she nearly forgot the hidden agents.

“You delivered my husband to him.”

“Yes.”

The word echoed through the chapel.

Voss did not attempt to excuse himself.

“He believed Arden would intimidate Daniel, recover the evidence, and release him. I was wrong.”

“You were not wrong. You were afraid.”

Voss accepted the accusation.

“The transmitter under the flowers contains Daniel’s final archive location. It activates only when combined with the financial key and Captain Snow.”

Claire placed the bear beside the lilies.

The nameplate glowed.

Daniel’s voice filled the chapel again.

“Victor, if you are standing beside Claire, then Arden has turned against you.”

Voss closed his eyes.

“You always did enjoy being right, Daniel.”

The recording continued.

“You told yourself the Guardian Fund theft protected classified operations. Then you told yourself the families would never notice. Finally, you told yourself you could stop whenever you wanted.”

Voss stared at the coffin.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You cannot repair what you did. But you can stop Arden from doing it again.”

The optical transmitter projected a map onto the coffin flag.

A location appeared beneath the capital.

CENTRAL DEFENSE DATA VAULT.

Whiteout would not be activated from the memorial.

It would be activated from the government’s primary military archive.

A second message appeared.

FINAL ARCHIVE TRANSFER: 23:40.

They had less than two hours.

Suddenly, Voss looked toward the rear balcony.

“Someone moved.”

A shot struck the stone wall above him.

Claire dropped behind the coffin.

Federal agents rushed from the side rooms.

A dark figure fled across the upper balcony.

Noah pursued.

The shooter escaped through a roof access door, but left behind a silver compass pin.

Shaw entered the chapel.

“Arden knows Voss is cooperating.”

Voss handed her the financial key.

“He will activate Whiteout without me.”

“You said the key was required.”

“He has a substitute.”

“Who?”

May you like

Voss looked toward the roof where the attacker had vanished.

“Captain Monroe.”
