Chapter 10 - The Man Who Refused to Disappear
Colonel Voss had escaped without damaging the transport vehicle or alerting the officers following behind it.
The driver and two guards were missing.
Security footage showed the vehicle entering a covered checkpoint. Six minutes later, it left with a different driver wearing the same uniform.
The substitution had required access to federal routes, personnel schedules, and live security feeds.
Guardian Shepherd reached far beyond the military.
Margaret Shaw moved Claire, Emma, Noah, Kessler, General Ward, and Lila to a protected federal residence.
Captain Snow was examined inside a shielded room.
Lila discovered the second transmitter beneath the bear’s blue ribbon. It had been added after Daniel’s final modifications, probably during the period between the crash and the courier delivery.
She removed it.
“This was built to receive commands as well as transmit location,” she said.
“Could someone erase Daniel’s recordings?” Claire asked.
“They tried. His main storage system is isolated.”
“Can you access everything?”
“Not yet. The bear releases files only when specific conditions are met.”
Emma sat beside the worktable.
“What condition comes next?”
Lila smiled gently.
“Your father liked puzzles.”
“He said puzzles make people look twice.”
Claire remembered Daniel saying the same thing while teaching Emma to find hidden shapes in picture books.
Noah placed photographs from the funeral across the table.
Arden appeared in six images.
In each one, his silver-handled cane remained in his right hand.
Lila enlarged the handle.
“A silver compass.”
The design matched the tracker Captain Monroe had placed on Kessler.
“Arden was signaling someone,” Noah said.
General Ward examined the sequence.
“In the first photograph, the compass points toward the coffin. In the second, toward the side door. In the third, toward Monroe.”
Kessler understood.
“He ordered Monroe to move when the recording started.”
Shaw entered carrying a secure phone.
“We found one of Voss’s missing guards. He was left at a roadside medical station. He says the transport was intercepted by men carrying orders signed by General Arden.”
“That is enough to arrest him,” Claire said.
“Arden claims the signature was forged. His attorneys have already obtained a temporary restriction preventing investigators from searching his property.”
Noah shook his head.
“He is buying time.”
“For what?” Ward asked.
Captain Snow answered.
Its speaker clicked.
Daniel’s voice began.
“Arden will try to activate the final Guardian Shepherd protocol.”
Shaw moved toward the bear.
“What final protocol?”
“Every financial transfer, transport record, and witness file will be erased. He calls it Whiteout.”
Lila checked the device.
“This recording was triggered by Arden’s voice in the tunnel.”
Daniel continued.
“Whiteout requires three authorization sources. Voss controls the financial key. Director Seventeen controls the command key. The third key is stored inside the national memorial.”
“We opened the memorial archive,” Claire said.
“No,” General Ward replied. “We opened Daniel’s hidden access point. The system itself remained active.”
Shaw contacted investigators at the memorial.
No one answered.
The protected residence alarm sounded.
A federal agent entered.
“We lost communication with the memorial six minutes ago.”
A news broadcast appeared on the television.
An official military spokesperson stood outside Saint Michael’s Chapel.
“Evidence has emerged indicating Captain Daniel Hale diverted classified records and Guardian Fund payments before his death.”
Claire stared at the screen.
The report displayed falsified financial statements bearing Daniel’s signature.
Arden appeared before reporters.
“I loved Daniel Hale as a son,” he said sadly. “But service requires us to face the truth, even when that truth causes pain.”
Emma looked at her father’s photograph.
“He is lying.”
Claire knelt beside her.
“Yes.”
“Everyone will think Daddy was bad.”
“Not everyone.”
Noah turned off the television.
The campaign against Daniel served two purposes. It destroyed his credibility and gave Arden a public reason to erase the evidence he had supposedly stolen.
Shaw received another message.
Voss had contacted federal investigators.
He wanted immunity.
In exchange, he promised to provide the financial key and testify against General Arden.
“Where is he?” Noah asked.
“He will speak only to Claire.”
Claire looked at Emma.
“No.”
Shaw waited.
Claire understood the choice. Voss had threatened her family, pursued them through the chapel, and helped destroy Daniel’s transport. But he might also be their only chance to stop Whiteout.
“Where does he want to meet?”
“Saint Michael’s Chapel.”
“The funeral site?”
“He says Daniel hid the real archive there.”
