Chapter 7 - The Man in the Gray JacketAdrian Vale remained missing for two days.

Police traced the abandoned SUV but found no useful fingerprints beyond those already expected. Investigators believed someone had helped him leave the area.

Then Daniel discovered an unauthorized login attempt on one of the frozen accounts.

The signal came from a roadside motel outside Richmond.

Police arrived after Adrian had checked out, but surveillance footage showed him leaving in a silver sedan.

The vehicle belonged to Marcus Hale, a former Bennett Urban Development accountant who had been dismissed for manipulating expense reports.

Sawyer remembered Marcus as a quiet man who blamed the company for his financial problems. Adrian had apparently recruited him months earlier.

Detective Ortiz issued alerts for both men.

Meanwhile, Sawyer moved Gracie into a private recovery residence near the hospital. Maria joined them, and Evelyn visited every afternoon with cookies and mystery books.

Sawyer canceled every business trip.

For the first time in years, his calendar contained nothing more important than breakfast with his daughter.

Gracie did not recover all at once.

Some mornings she laughed. Other days, a closing door made her jump. She refused to sleep without a lamp and asked Sawyer to check the locks repeatedly.

He never told her to stop.

Each night, he walked through the residence with her, showing her that the windows were secure and the doors were locked from the inside.

On the third evening, Sawyer’s phone rang.

The number was blocked.

He answered.

“Hello?”

Adrian laughed softly.

“You’ve always been too dramatic.”

Sawyer immediately signaled to Detective Ortiz, who had stationed an officer nearby.

“Where are you?”

“Concerned about me?”

“I’m concerned about Gracie.”

“She caused all of this.”

Sawyer’s voice became cold.

“She is eight years old.”

“She stole property that didn’t belong to her.”

“She protected evidence of your crime.”

“You think you won because you froze the accounts?”

“I think you’re running.”

Adrian was silent.

Then he said, “Carolina will blame me. She always does that when things collapse.”

“You locked Gracie inside the pool house.”

“I followed Carolina’s instructions.”

Detective Ortiz, listening through a second device, wrote a note.

KEEP HIM TALKING.

Sawyer continued.

“Carolina says you acted alone.”

“She’s lying. It was her plan.”

“Then prove it.”

Adrian laughed again.

“You’re trying to locate me.”

“You called me.”

“I called because you have something I need.”

“What?”

“The silver drive.”

“It’s with the police.”

“That drive contains more than financial records. There are files that could destroy people you work with.”

“Then those people can answer for their actions.”

“You don’t understand. Marcus copied company contracts, private emails, settlement agreements—everything. Give me the drive, and I disappear.”

“You already tried to disappear with my daughter.”

“She was Carolina’s problem, not mine.”

Sawyer’s hand tightened around the phone.

“You frightened her. You injured her. You left her alone.”

“I didn’t touch her after she fell.”

The words were carefully chosen.

Sawyer heard traffic in the background, followed by a mechanical announcement.

Detective Ortiz wrote another note.

TRAIN STATION.

“Where are you going?” Sawyer asked.

“Away from your perfect little world.”

“You won’t get far.”

“I already have new documents.”

A distant voice announced a departure for Washington.

Detective Ortiz left the room, speaking urgently into her radio.

Adrian continued.

“Tell Carolina she should have listened to me.”

“She can’t take your calls from jail.”

For the first time, Adrian sounded surprised.

“What?”

“She was arrested.”

The line went silent.

Then Adrian disconnected.

Police reached the station within minutes.

They found Marcus near the ticket machines. He surrendered immediately and told officers Adrian had boarded a northbound train.

Authorities stopped the train before it reached the next station.

Adrian attempted to leave through an emergency exit, but officers were waiting along the tracks.

Inside his bag, they found forged passports, cash, Carolina’s jewelry, and printed instructions for accessing Gracie’s trust.

He had planned to betray Carolina from the beginning.

The man in the gray jacket was finally in custody.
