Chapter 5 - The Missing MillionsBy sunrise, investigators had found evidence that the crisis went far beyond one terrible night.
The silver device was not inside the mansion, but Adrian had left in a hurry.
A second phone was discovered behind books in Carolina’s dressing room. It contained encrypted messages, financial account numbers, and photographs of Sawyer’s signature.
The messages showed that Carolina and Adrian had been planning to transfer money from a family investment account into offshore companies controlled by Adrian.
The account held nearly eighteen million dollars.
Much of it had been established for Gracie’s future.
Detective Ortiz showed Sawyer several messages.
Carolina: He leaves Thursday. We move it Saturday.
Adrian: What about the girl?
Carolina: She doesn’t understand anything.
Adrian: She watches everything.
Carolina: Then I’ll handle her.
Sawyer could barely continue reading.
There were also discussions of passports, private flights, and a rented property outside the United States.
Carolina had not merely planned to steal money.
She had planned to take Gracie and disappear.
Sawyer contacted Daniel and the company’s legal department. They immediately froze every account connected to Carolina’s access.
Daniel called twenty minutes later.
“We stopped two transfer attempts,” he said. “One was submitted yesterday afternoon.”
“How much?”
“Twelve million.”
“Whose authorization?”
“Yours.”
Sawyer stared through the hospital window.
“But I never authorized it.”
“We know. The signature appears copied, and the digital certificate was generated from your home office.”
“Can the transfer still go through?”
“No. We blocked it.”
Sawyer released a breath.
“What about the remaining accounts?”
“Locked. Adrian won’t get a dollar.”
That should have brought relief.
Instead, Sawyer thought of Carolina standing in the rain, insisting that Gracie had suffered a simple accident while twelve million dollars was moving through stolen documents.
He returned to the hallway.
Carolina and her attorney were gone.
Detective Ortiz approached him.
“Your wife left after learning that officers wanted to conduct a formal interview.”
“Can she leave?”
“We do not yet have grounds to arrest her, but she cannot remove Gracie from the hospital.”
“Where is Adrian?”
“We found his SUV abandoned six miles away. He may have switched vehicles.”
Evelyn remained in the waiting area. She had refused to go home until Gracie was safe.
Sawyer sat beside her.
“I should have seen it,” he said.
Evelyn shook her head.
“People who deceive others are often very skilled at appearing trustworthy.”
“I was away too much.”
“That may be something you regret, but Carolina and Adrian made their own choices.”
Sawyer looked at the elderly woman.
“Why didn’t you tell me about the SUV?”
“I almost did. Then Carolina told me it belonged to a contractor. I convinced myself there might be an innocent explanation.”
“You still came tonight.”
“I wish I had come sooner.”
They sat in silence, sharing different versions of the same guilt.
Dr. Morris eventually stepped into the hall.
“Gracie is asking for her father.”
Sawyer rose immediately.
Inside the room, Gracie was holding a paper cup of warm chocolate.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I remembered something.”
“What is it?”
“When Uncle Adrian took the silver box, he put it inside the statue.”
“Which statue?”
“The angel in Grandma’s garden.”
Sawyer knew exactly where she meant.
Behind the mansion stood a small memorial garden built for his mother. At its center was a stone angel holding a hollow bronze lantern.
The police had searched the house.
They had not searched the lantern.
Sawyer called Detective Ortiz.
Within an hour, an officer opened the bronze panel and found the silver flash drive hidden inside.
Adrian’s entire plan was now in police custody.
But one discovery on the drive was even worse than the stolen money.
There was a document titled CUSTODY STRATEGY.

Carolina had been building a case to destroy him long before she planned to disappear.
