Chapter 8 - THE ANNIVERSARY TRAP

On Friday morning, Lucas brought Margot breakfast in bed.

Ten years earlier, he had proposed over the same meal: coffee, strawberries, and almond pastries from a bakery near the river.

“Happy anniversary,” he said.

Margot looked at the man who had spent more than a decade studying her habits.

“Happy anniversary.”

He gave her a velvet box.

Inside was a diamond necklace.

“It’s beautiful,” she said.

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

Margot knew Lucas’s grandmother had never owned jewelry like that.

The necklace had been purchased three days earlier using money from Meridian Advisory Partners.

Lucas fastened it around her neck.

His fingers rested briefly against her skin.

“Tonight begins a new chapter,” he said.

“Yes,” Margot replied. “It does.”

Throughout the day, caterers filled the house with flowers, candles, and music stands. Lucas supervised every detail.

He wanted the signing to appear elegant and voluntary.

He had invited board members so they would witness Margot giving him expanded authority. Afterward, he planned to remove her from management using the false medical declaration.

By Monday, he would control the company.

At least, that was what he believed.

At eight that morning, Miriam filed the revocation of his power of attorney.

At nine, the board suspended him from all company duties.

The decision remained confidential until the dinner.

At ten, detectives obtained authority to seize Meridian’s financial records.

At noon, Evelyn delivered access to Lucas’s private server.

The files contained forged signatures, recordings, photographs, and lists of assets belonging to six different women.

Margot was not his first target.

She was simply the one he had come closest to destroying.

At seven, guests began arriving.

Lucas wore a black tuxedo and welcomed them with effortless charm.

Evelyn arrived in silver.

When Lucas kissed her cheek, Margot saw the fear in Evelyn’s eyes.

“Everything ready?” Lucas whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

Margot stood beneath the chandelier, wearing the diamond necklace purchased with stolen money.

She spoke with investors, thanked employees, and accepted congratulations.

No one suspected that detectives waited in a car outside.

After dinner, Lucas tapped his glass.

“My wife and I have spent ten extraordinary years together.”

Margot watched him perform gratitude.

He spoke about partnership, loyalty, and trust.

Then Evelyn placed the leather folder on the desk.

“As part of our anniversary,” Lucas said, “Margot and I are updating our estate plan to protect everything we’ve built.”

Applause followed.

Margot walked toward the desk.

Lucas opened the folder and handed her the silver pen.

A gold tab marked the first signature line.

She held the pen above the page.

Lucas smiled encouragingly.

For a moment, the entire room became still.

This was the instant he had prepared for.

Every dinner.

Every comforting word.

Every document he had summarized so she would not read it herself.

Margot lowered the pen.

Then she moved it away from the page.

“There’s one thing missing,” she said.

Lucas’s smile tightened.

“What?”

“Your acknowledgment.”

Evelyn removed the final document from her folder.

Lucas glanced at her.

She forced a professional expression.

“It confirms that we prepared and reviewed the supporting records,” Evelyn said.

Lucas barely looked at the page.

He signed.

Evelyn signed beneath him.

Margot closed the folder.

Behind the guests, the doors opened.

Miriam entered with Detective Foster.

Lucas stared at them.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

She stepped away from him.

“Margot,” he said carefully, “what have you done?”

She touched the diamond necklace.

“For the first time in ten years?”

She removed it and placed it on top of the forged documents.

May you like

“I paid attention.”
