Chapter 5 - THE MAN ON THE PHONE
Adrian Cross was careful.
He did not use company email accounts. He met Lucas in quiet restaurants. He routed payments through consulting firms and signed documents in different offices.
But careful people often became careless when they believed no one was watching.
Daniel found a hotel invoice charged to Meridian Advisory Partners.
On the same date, Adrian had notarized three trust amendments supposedly signed by Margot.
Margot had been in Toronto attending a publishing conference.
“That proves I wasn’t present,” she said.
“It proves something stronger,” Miriam replied. “The hotel’s conference records confirm Lucas, Evelyn, and Adrian were all there together.”
“Why would they choose a public hotel?”
“Because they believed the paperwork would never be questioned.”
Daniel traced another payment from Meridian to an apartment rented in Evelyn’s name.
Lucas had visited the building regularly for four years.
Margot did not ask for photographs.
She no longer needed proof of the affair.
The financial conspiracy mattered more.
Miriam arranged for Margot to meet a financial-crimes investigator named Detective Lena Foster. They spoke in a private conference room away from the police station.
Lena examined copies of the forged documents.
“You need to let them continue,” she said.
Margot stared at her.
“Continue stealing?”
“Continue believing their plan is safe. We already have historical evidence, but the anniversary signing could establish intent.”
“They expect me to sign Friday.”
“Then Friday gives us witnesses.”
Margot thought about the guests Lucas had invited.
Executives.
Investors.
Members of the board.
People whose presence would make the documents appear legitimate.
“What do I do?”
“Behave as though you trust him.”
The request made Margot feel sick.
That evening, she returned home to find Evelyn sitting in the living room.
She wore a cream suit and held a leather folder on her lap.
“Surprise,” Evelyn said.
Margot looked at Lucas.
He poured three glasses of wine.
“Evelyn brought the final anniversary documents.”
Margot sat opposite her former friend.
Evelyn opened the folder.
“These changes will protect you if anything happens to Lucas.”
Margot almost laughed.
Instead, she examined the first page.
“You’ve already read everything?” she asked.
“Of course.”
“Every line?”
Evelyn’s gaze flickered toward Lucas.
“Every line that matters.”
Lucas handed Margot a glass of wine.
“We can review the details now, but you don’t need to sign until Friday.”
Margot placed the glass untouched beside her.
“I’d like to understand it.”
Lucas smiled patiently.
“That’s why Evelyn is here.”
For forty minutes, Evelyn explained the documents.
She described the trust amendment as a routine restructuring. She called the transfer of voting authority temporary. She claimed Lucas’s power to sell shares would be used only in an emergency.
She never mentioned Meridian.
She never mentioned the false medical declaration.
She never mentioned that Margot’s signature already appeared on pages she had never seen.
When Evelyn finished, Margot touched one of the gold signature tabs.
“You’ve made this very easy.”
Lucas sat beside her.
“That’s the idea.”
Margot looked directly at Evelyn.
“And you’re certain this protects me?”
Evelyn held her gaze.
“Completely.”
Margot smiled.
“Then I’m ready to sign Friday.”
Lucas’s shoulders relaxed.
Evelyn closed the folder.
They believed the performance was over.
