Chapter 9 - The Truth About the Money
Three days after the wedding, Mara received a call from her aunt Claire.
The anniversary gift fund was larger than anyone had realized.
Evelyn had collected nearly eighteen thousand dollars.
She claimed the money would pay for a second honeymoon, but no trip had been booked. Some transfers had been deposited into an account used to cover personal debts.
Richard contacted Mara that evening.
“I did not know,” he said.
Mara believed him.
But innocence about the money did not erase his role in the deception.
“What are you going to do?”
“I am returning every dollar.”
“Even the amount already spent?”
“I will sell the convertible.”
The car had been Evelyn’s anniversary gift to herself.
Mara almost laughed at the justice of it.
Richard continued.
“I have also moved out.”
Mara sat upright.
“Where are you staying?”
“A hotel for now.”
“Does Mom know?”
“She knows.”
Mara heard exhaustion in his voice.
“I spent thirty-five years believing peace meant preventing her anger,” he said. “All I did was make everyone else responsible for it.”
Mara looked through the window at Daniel watering the white roses they had brought home from the wedding.
“What happens next is between you and Mom.”
“I know.”
“You cannot use me as the reason you leave or the reason you return.”
“I understand.”
For the first time, Richard did not ask Mara to forgive him.
He simply accepted the consequences.
Evelyn reacted differently.
She sent long messages accusing Mara of destroying the family. She claimed Daniel had manipulated everyone. She threatened to tell relatives the wedding had been staged to humiliate her.
Mara answered once.
I love you, but I will not have a relationship with you while you lie about me, insult my husband, or punish people for disagreeing with you. When you are ready to take responsibility, you may contact me.
Then Mara blocked her number for thirty days.
