Chapter 1 - The Perfect Daughter

For most of her life, Mara Harrington had been introduced as the perfect daughter.
She earned excellent grades, remembered birthdays, avoided public arguments, and apologized even when she had done nothing wrong. At family dinners, she laughed at Richard’s business stories and complimented Evelyn’s decorations.
Her parents called her easy.
What they meant was obedient.
Evelyn made every important decision in the Harrington family. She selected vacation destinations, controlled holiday schedules, and decided which relatives deserved invitations to family events.
Richard rarely challenged her.
He had discovered that agreeing with Evelyn was easier than enduring the punishment that followed disagreement. Over time, his silence became support.
When Mara became engaged to Daniel Whitmore, she promised herself the wedding would be different.
Daniel was thoughtful, patient, and quietly confident. He worked as an architect and had spent years learning when to speak and when to listen. He never treated Mara’s kindness as weakness.
When he proposed beneath the oak tree where they had shared their first picnic, Mara said yes before he had finished asking.
For three months, wedding planning felt joyful.
Mara chose white roses because they reminded her of her grandmother’s garden. Daniel chose a small jazz band. They selected an elegant reception hall with tall windows and warm afternoon light.
Then Evelyn became involved.
She replaced the simple table settings with gold-rimmed plates. She doubled the guest list and invited Richard’s business partners. She criticized Mara’s gown, questioned Daniel’s family, and repeatedly reminded everyone that she was paying for the wedding.
In reality, Evelyn had paid only the first deposit.
Most of the wedding expenses came from an inheritance left to Mara by her grandmother, Beatrice.
But Evelyn never mentioned that.
Whenever Mara objected, her mother smiled.
“You want your wedding to be beautiful, don’t you?”
Mara always surrendered.

Until Evelyn decided that being involved was no longer enough.
She wanted the wedding itself.
