Chapter 8 - Four Heirs

The film contained twenty-seven frames.

Under magnification, each frame revealed a name, a blood type, a trust allocation, and a coded designation. Emily was listed as HEIR NORTH. Adrian was HEIR WEST. Sophie Hale was HEIR EAST.

HEIR SOUTH had no name.

Only tomorrow’s date.

Marcus demanded an explanation from Helen.

She gave one reluctantly.

Blackthorn’s original charter divided control among four family lines. Daniel designed it that way to prevent any single founder from betraying the others. Helen secretly amended the structure so that when the four heirs reached specific legal milestones, they could dissolve the network and release its records.

Thomas had protected Emily.

Vivian had shaped Adrian.

Helen had hidden her own heir.

Marcus looked at Sophie. “My daughter?”

Helen nodded. “Your late wife, Rebecca, was my daughter.”

Marcus staggered as though struck.

Rebecca Hale had died during childbirth. Helen had never revealed their connection because Daniel monitored descendants. Sophie’s birth activated the third branch of the charter.

“And the fourth?” Emily asked.

“Daniel’s other child,” Helen said. “A child we believed died at birth.”

Adrian laughed from the back of the federal transport van.

They had moved everyone to a secure command center in an abandoned courthouse. Adrian and Vivian were held in separate cells, but sound carried through the old vents.

“You still think Daniel is the villain in Helen’s story,” Adrian called. “Ask her why Rebecca died.”

Marcus crossed the corridor so fast two agents restrained him.

Adrian leaned close to the bars. “Blackthorn did not kill your wife. Helen’s people moved the ambulance. They wanted the baby, not the mother.”

Helen denied it, but her certainty had cracks.

Emily requested Rebecca’s medical file. The hospital listed a catastrophic hemorrhage and a thirty-two-minute delay caused by road construction. The construction permit belonged to a Hartwell subsidiary.

Thomas’s company.

Marcus stared at Emily as if she carried the guilt herself.

“This is what Daniel does,” she said. “He takes one fact and builds a weapon around it.”

“But the fact is real.”

“Yes.”

They needed the unnamed fourth heir before the date on the film. A frame contained coordinates leading to a rural maternity clinic closed twenty-eight years earlier.

Emily, Marcus, and Helen flew by helicopter at dawn. The clinic stood in a valley drowned by fog. Inside, old examination rooms had been stripped, but fresh footprints crossed the dust.

In the records basement, they found rows of infant files marked with the blackthorn crown.

The program had targeted children born to wealthy or politically connected families. Some were observed. Some were exchanged. Some were raised by guardians loyal to Daniel.

Emily found her own file.

SUBJECT: EMILY VALE-HART

PRIMARY TRAIT: RESISTANCE TO DIRECT AUTHORITY

RECOMMENDED LEVERAGE: ABANDONMENT

Her relationship with Adrian had exploited the exact wound named in a file written when she was an infant.

Marcus found Sophie’s file and tore it in half.

Helen found Rebecca’s.

Before she could open it, a shot destroyed the overhead light.

Owen Pike, who had supposedly been taken into federal custody, emerged from the darkness. He carried a rifle and wore an agency jacket.

“Pike escaped?” Emily asked.

“No,” Marcus said. “Someone released him.”

Pike aimed at Helen. “The Custodian sends his gratitude. You gathered the heirs in one place.”

Emily knocked over a metal shelf. Files exploded across the floor. Marcus fired while Helen pulled a hidden pistol from her coat.

Pike retreated through a rear corridor.

They pursued him into the old delivery ward. A neonatal incubator stood in the center, connected to new power cables.

Inside was not a baby.

It was a biometric scanner.

A screen displayed four empty circles. Three filled as Emily, Marcus, and Helen entered the room.

The fourth turned green before anyone else appeared.

A speaker activated.

“Thank you,” a man said. “Identity confirmation complete.”

Steel shutters slammed over the doors.

Gas hissed from the vents.

Marcus covered Sophie’s file over his mouth. Emily searched the walls for a control panel. Helen fired at the lock, but the bullets flattened against reinforced steel.

On the screen, the unnamed fourth heir finally appeared.

SIMON RUSK.

Emily understood.

Rusk was not Daniel.

He was Daniel’s son.

Among the infant files, Emily discovered evaluations written in Adrian's childhood handwriting. At age ten, he had been ordered to observe her through one-way glass and list what made her cry. Instead, he wrote that she stopped crying when adults left the room because she did not want them to see they had hurt her. The evaluator marked his answer as emotional contamination. A later note recommended separating him from Emily until he learned detachment. The file did not absolve the adult he became, but it revealed the shape of the cage that formed him. Emily folded the page and placed it inside her coat, uncertain whether she was preserving evidence or the last fragment of a love she no longer trusted.

And according to the countdown beneath his name, Simon had exactly eight hours left to live.
