Chapter 11 - My Father Came Back From the Dead

Emily could not move.

Thomas looked older, thinner, and marked by a burn along his neck, but he was unmistakably the man who raised her.

“Dad?”

His eyes filled with tears.

He stepped forward.

Marcus aimed his weapon. “Do not move.”

Thomas raised both hands. “Daniel is in the control room. We have less than an hour.”

Emily crossed the distance and struck him across the face.

The sound echoed through the underground ward.

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let Mother disappear into illness.”

“I know.”

“You watched me marry into their family.”

“I tried to stop it.”

“From where? Your grave?”

Thomas accepted every word. He had survived the crash because Simon pulled him from the car. Blackthorn agents arrived before emergency services. To protect Emily, Thomas allowed Daniel to believe he had severe brain damage and no useful memory. For three years, he was moved between private facilities under false names.

Six months earlier, he escaped.

“Why did you not come to me?”

“Because Daniel had placed someone inside your closest circle. I did not know who.”

Emily glanced at Marcus.

Thomas noticed.

“The recording in Helen’s box was genuine,” he said. “But one sentence was added later.”

The person standing closest to you may not be the person you need to fear most.

“Who added it?” Emily asked.

“Daniel.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened. “Adrian said I edited it.”

“Adrian repeats whatever keeps the room unstable.”

Thomas led them through maintenance tunnels toward the control center. Along the way, he explained the charter. Blackthorn’s funds were distributed through a network that required approval from the four heir branches. At midnight on Emily’s birthday, a dissolution window would open for twelve minutes. If all four consented, the accounts would freeze and the evidence would release automatically to international authorities.

If they failed, Daniel could reset the charter using a blood succession protocol.

The four samples in the machine were enough.

“He does not need us alive after midnight,” Emily said.

“No.”

They reached a circular control room filled with servers.

Dr. Nathan Grey sat at the central console.

He looked exactly as Emily remembered: silver hair, calm eyes, tailored gray suit. He had comforted her after panic attacks. He had attended Thomas’s funeral. He had toasted her engagement.

Daniel Vale smiled.

“My two daughters and my two sons,” he said, looking at Emily, Helen, Simon, and Thomas in a way that made relationships feel like ownership. “All the architecture returns to its designer.”

Helen aimed at him. “Step away from the console.”

Daniel tapped his right thumb three times.

“I am unarmed.”

Marcus noticed the gesture.

Daniel continued, “At midnight, Blackthorn becomes untouchable. Kill me and the failsafe distributes every compromising file to the people named in it. Governments will fall. Markets will collapse. Innocent families will be destroyed alongside the guilty.”

“You built the weapon,” Emily said.

“I built stability. Secrets prevent wars more often than treaties.”

“You groomed children.”

“I prepared heirs.”

“You ordered my murder.”

“I ordered a transition. Adrian improvised the language.”

Thomas moved toward the server rack. Daniel pressed a key.

Claire’s chamber sealed again in the medical ward. Sophie’s location appeared on another screen: she was back at the courthouse, now held by Vivian.

Adrian stood beside her.

Daniel had divided them.

“You have twelve minutes to choose,” he said. “Dissolve Blackthorn and sacrifice everyone whose secrets keep the world balanced, or renew it under your control.”

A timer began.

00:12:00.

Thomas whispered to Emily, “There is a third option.”

Daniel heard him.

For the first time, his calm expression vanished.

He drew a pistol from beneath the console and fired.

Thomas fell.

Emily screamed and caught him before his head struck the floor. Blood spread across his shirt.

Marcus shot Daniel in the shoulder. Helen rushed the console. Simon tried to open Claire’s chamber remotely.

Thomas pressed something into Emily’s palm.

Her discarded engagement ring.

Adrian had replaced its diamond with a data crystal.

“Inside,” Thomas gasped. “The names Daniel never found.”

The timer reached ten minutes.

On the screens, Adrian lifted a gun toward Sophie.

Emily looked at the ring, her wounded father, and Daniel’s blood on the console.

Then a new message appeared:

May you like

Thomas admitted he had watched Emily from a distance during her engagement year. He saw Adrian comfort her after Margaret's worst episode and almost revealed himself. Then he noticed a Blackthorn observer photographing them from a parked car. Thomas followed the observer and discovered that Adrian later met him in secret. He assumed Adrian was reporting on Emily. Months later, Thomas learned Adrian had fed the man false schedules and moved Emily away from planned attacks. Even Thomas could not decide whether Adrian was infiltrating Blackthorn or serving it more intelligently. That uncertainty was why he hid the counter-key inside the ring: only Emily's judgment at the final moment could complete it.

HEIR NORTH MUST CHOOSE WHO DIES FIRST.
