Chapter 2 - The Harrington Family Arrives

The Harrington family checked into the Royal Mariner on a Friday afternoon.

Their arrival disrupted the entire lobby.

Two black SUVs stopped beneath the entrance canopy. Drivers unloaded designer suitcases while hotel staff hurried to greet the family.

Margaret Harrington entered first.

She was elegant, controlled, and accustomed to being recognized. Her late husband had built a national real estate company, and Margaret had expanded the family’s influence through charity boards, political donations, and luxury development projects.

Her son Blake followed.

At twenty-eight, Blake had never held a job longer than six months. He moved between private clubs, expensive vacations, and business ventures funded by his family.

He wore confidence like a tailored suit.

Victor rushed from the reception desk to welcome them.

“Mrs. Harrington, Mr. Harrington, the Royal Mariner is honored to have you back.”

Margaret gave him a distracted smile.

“We expect the presidential suite to be exactly as requested.”

“Of course.”

“And no interruptions. Blake has had a difficult week.”

Victor looked toward Blake with concern.

“I’ll make sure the staff gives you complete privacy.”

Blake’s attention had already moved to Lily.

She stood near the concierge desk, speaking with a family about a boat tour.

When she finished, Blake approached her.

“You’re new,” he said.

“Yes, sir. My name is Lily. How may I assist you?”

He looked at her name tag.

“I can read.”

Lily kept her expression neutral.

“Of course. Is there something you need?”

“A dinner reservation. Somewhere exclusive.”

Lily opened the reservation system.

“What type of cuisine would you prefer?”

“Surprise me.”

She suggested three restaurants.

He rejected all of them without explanation.

Finally, he leaned against the desk.

“What time do you finish work?”

Lily paused.

“I can help you with hotel services while I’m on duty.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Before she could respond, Rosa approached.

“Mr. Harrington, I can personally assist with your reservation.”

Blake looked annoyed but eventually selected a restaurant.

After he walked away, Rosa lowered her voice.

“Do not be alone with him.”

Lily glanced toward Blake.

“Has something happened before?”

“Nothing anyone could prove.”

That answer unsettled her more than a clear warning would have.

Over the following days, Blake found reasons to appear wherever Lily was working.

He asked her to bring additional towels even when housekeeping was available.

He called the front desk to complain that the fruit in his suite was not cold enough.

He requested restaurant recommendations, rejected them, and then asked Lily to accompany him.

Each time, she remained polite and distant.

Each time, his interest became less friendly.

One evening, Blake stopped her near the elevators.

“You act like you’re too good to speak to me.”

“I’m speaking to you now, sir.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I’m an employee. You’re a guest.”

He smiled.

“That arrangement can change.”

Lily stepped toward the lobby.

“I need to return to the desk.”

Blake caught the edge of her name tag between his fingers.

“You’re very serious, Lily Carter.”

She removed his hand.

“Please don’t touch my uniform.”

His smile vanished.

For one brief second, Lily saw something cold behind his charming expression.

Then he laughed.

“Relax. I was joking.”

May you like

But Lily knew he had not been joking.

He had been testing how much she would tolerate.
