Chapter 12 - The Last Recording

Carter returned to the mansion with Chloe.

Rebecca refused to come.

She told him there was one more thing he had to see.

The final recording.

Not Day 112.

Not Day 113.

A recording created six years earlier.

The night Carter's father supposedly died.

Carter opened it.

The camera showed the mansion.

Robert entered the library.

Someone followed him.

Carter recognized the person immediately.

The person handed Robert a document.

Robert signed it.

Then he looked directly toward the hidden camera.

His lips formed a sentence.

Carter increased the volume.

“Carter must never know.”

The other person asked:

“And Eleanor?”

Robert replied:

“She knows enough.”

Carter looked at Eleanor.

She closed her eyes.

“Mom.”

She began to cry.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From whom?”

She didn't answer.

Carter replayed the recording.

This time, he noticed something behind Robert.

A second door.

A door that didn't exist anymore.

He remembered the old blueprint.

The mansion had once contained a private office beneath the library.

Carter returned to the hidden room.

Behind a shelf was a small switch.

The wall opened.

Inside was a narrow chamber.

A desk.

A chair.

A safe.

And one photograph.

Carter picked it up.

It showed his father with Carter as a child.

Behind them stood the person who had controlled everything.

Carter turned the photograph over.

A handwritten message waited on the back.

You were never the target.

Carter frowned.

Then he read the second line.

Your mother was.

His heart dropped.

Eleanor was not merely a witness.

She was the reason everything had started.

Carter rushed upstairs.

“Mom!”

No answer.

He entered her room.

The bed was empty.

The window was open.

On the pillow was a note.

Carter picked it up.

Three words.

COME ALONE.

Below them was an address.

May you like

Carter recognized it.

The old family cemetery.
