Chapter 11 - The Refinery

The refinery stood beneath a gray morning sky.

Carter entered through the old gate.

Rebecca followed.

Maya stayed with Eleanor.

Chloe was missing.

Carter didn't ask where she had gone.

He wasn't sure he wanted to know.

Inside the control building, everything looked untouched.

Old monitors.

Dusty desks.

Broken equipment.

Then one screen turned on.

Robert Hayes appeared.

“Carter.”

Carter stepped closer.

His father's recording continued.

“You're going to believe everyone has betrayed you.”

Robert looked exhausted.

“They haven't.”

“Some were protecting you.”

“Some were protecting themselves.”

“And one person was controlling all of them.”

The screen flickered.

A name appeared.

Carter stared.

The name was not Chloe.

Not Victor.

Not Rebecca.

It was someone Carter knew personally.

Someone who had been in his home many times.

Someone who had hugged him after his father's funeral.

Carter whispered:

“No.”

The door behind him closed.

He turned.

Chloe stood there.

Her red dress was gone.

She wore a simple black coat.

Her expression was different.

No arrogance.

No smile.

Only fear.

“You weren't supposed to see this.”

Carter stared at her.

“Who is controlling everything?”

Chloe shook her head.

“If I tell you, you'll never trust anyone again.”

“I already don't.”

She approached.

“I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“I never wanted your mother hurt.”

Carter said nothing.

“I was trying to get her out.”

“Then why did you treat her like that?”

Chloe lowered her eyes.

“Because they were watching me.”

Carter stared.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The first month.”

“You never called.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

Chloe looked at him.

“Because someone had your phone.”

Carter froze.

“My phone?”

She nodded.

“Your messages. Your calls. Your emails.”

Carter remembered.

The strange messages.

The missing calls.

The arguments with Chloe.

The moments when she seemed distant.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Chloe stepped closer.

“Carter, the person behind this has been inside your life for years.”

“Who?”

Chloe whispered the name.

Carter's expression collapsed.

He knew the name.

He trusted that person.

He had never questioned them.

And suddenly he remembered one detail.

The person had never once visited the mansion after his father died.

May you like

Not once.

Because they already had a key.
