Chapter 9 - the name removed from the family

Arthur locked the photograph inside his case.
Richard demanded it back, but two estate guards stepped between them.
For the first time in Ethan’s memory, his father was treated like a visitor.
They moved to the library.
Rosa remained near the door with Lily asleep against her chest. Ethan wanted to tell her she could take Lily upstairs, but he feared that doing so would sound like another attempt to remove them from a conversation that concerned their lives.
Arthur placed the photograph on the table.
“Amelia was Eleanor’s younger sister.”
“Why was her name removed?” Ethan asked.
Richard sat beside the fireplace.
“She was unstable.”
Arthur’s expression remained neutral.
“She was seventeen.”
“She stole from the family.”
“She discovered you were stealing from Eleanor’s inheritance.”
Richard’s cane struck the floor again.
“You were our attorney.”
“I was Eleanor’s attorney.”
Victoria stood near the windows, watching everyone.
She had become strangely quiet.
Arthur continued.
“Amelia disappeared after accusing Richard of using family companies to conceal debt. Eleanor searched for her for years.”
“Disappeared how?” Ethan asked.
“Richard claimed she ran away.”
“And you believe something else?”
“I believe Eleanor found evidence Amelia was taken to a private institution under a false name.”
Rosa looked at Richard.
“You imprisoned a seventeen-year-old girl?”
Richard did not answer.
Victoria spoke instead.
“This has nothing to do with Lily.”
“It has everything to do with her,” Arthur said. “Amelia carried the same eye pattern. When Eleanor learned Rosa was pregnant, she feared Richard would erase another child from the family.”
Ethan looked at his father.
“Did you know Rosa’s baby might inherit those eyes?”
“I knew Eleanor was using sentiment to rewrite the trust.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Richard leaned forward.
“You want the truth? Your mother was obsessed with bloodlines. She believed the eye pattern proved moral character, as though biology made someone good.”
Arthur shook his head.
“Eleanor believed the eyes made hidden relatives easier to identify.”
The room fell silent.
Victoria’s gaze moved toward Lily.
Rosa noticed.
“You weren’t only searching for Lily,” she said.
Victoria’s calm returned too quickly.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You found the photograph before Ethan did.”
“No.”
“You knew about Amelia.”
Richard looked at Victoria.
A silent warning passed between them.
Arthur opened the black ledger.
Several pages contained payments to private investigators in Spain, Portugal and southern England. Beside each payment was the same coded description.
Gray-green subject.
Ethan felt cold.
“You have been searching for people with my mother’s eyes.”
Richard stood.
“This conversation is over.”
“No,” Ethan said. “It has finally started.”
Arthur pointed to the most recent entry.
Three months earlier, one investigator had been paid $85,000.
The location was the coastal town where Rosa and Lily lived.
Rosa’s arms tightened around her child.
“They found us.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That payment could mean anything.”
Arthur turned the page.
A printed photograph was attached.
It showed Lily outside the bakery, pointing toward Ethan’s engagement announcement on a television screen.
The picture had been taken through a window.
Rosa stared at it in horror.
“You were watching her.”
Victoria looked toward Richard.
He refused to meet her eyes.
Ethan took the photograph.
On the back, someone had written:
Subject confirmed. Wait until after marriage.
Ethan’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Confirmed how?”
No one answered.
He turned the picture toward Victoria.
“You already had proof.”
She remained silent.
“You knew Lily was my daughter before you agreed to marry me.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“I knew she might be.”
“Why wait until after the marriage?”
Richard stepped forward.
“Because the trust could be challenged once you had a legal spouse.”
Ethan looked at him.
His father had finally answered.
Arthur closed the ledger.
“The plan was simple. Victoria would marry Ethan, obtain access to the estate, challenge Lily’s recognition and use the delay to transfer the controlling shares.”
Rosa looked at Victoria.
“And after the transfer?”
Victoria glanced at sleeping Lily.
That single glance was enough.
Ethan moved between them.
“You will never be alone with my daughter.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You keep calling her that without a test.”
Arthur’s phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then he looked at Rosa.
“The laboratory has located a duplicate of the original report.”
“Where?” Ethan asked.
“It was delivered to Vale House this morning.”
Rosa looked toward the ballroom.
“The sealed envelope.”
Arthur nodded.
Ethan turned to Victoria.
“You lied about burning it.”
Victoria said nothing.
Richard closed his eyes.

For the first time, Ethan understood that his father was no longer protecting Victoria.
He was afraid of her.
