HER FATHER’S EYES / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - the wedding that should not begin

By noon, Vale House was filled with guests.

Black cars lined the drive. Reporters waited beyond the gates. White flowers covered the staircase, the ballroom columns and the path leading toward the altar.

The grand piano stood at the center of everything.

Victoria appeared in her wedding gown at one forty-five.

She looked serene.

No one watching her descend the staircase would have guessed that financial crimes, forged records and a hidden child stood between her and the vows.

Ethan waited near the altar.

He wore the tuxedo selected months earlier.

The sight of him gave Victoria confidence.

She believed he had chosen reputation over truth.

Rosa watched from the service corridor.

Lily remained in the secure guest suite with Margaret Bell, who had arrived that morning. Two guards stood outside the door.

That had been the arrangement.

At one fifty-two, the fire alarm sounded briefly in the east wing.

Security confirmed there was no fire.

At one fifty-five, Margaret called Rosa.

“Lily is gone.”

Rosa stopped breathing.

“What?”

“The bathroom window was open. One guard left during the alarm. The other found a message from Ethan ordering him downstairs.”

“Ethan sent no message.”

“I know.”

Rosa ran.

She searched the corridor, the east staircase and Eleanor’s music room.

No Lily.

The guests were already taking their seats.

The musicians began the processional.

Rosa reached the ballroom entrance just as Victoria appeared at the top of the grand staircase.

Then a single piano key sounded.

Everyone turned.

Lily stood beside the grand piano.

Her stuffed rabbit rested on the floor.

She looked frightened and confused.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

Ethan stepped away from the altar.

“Lily?”

The child touched another key.

Then another.

Four notes.

Eleanor’s unfinished melody.

A murmur passed through the guests.

Victoria descended quickly.

“Who allowed that child into the ballroom?”

Rosa pushed through the doorway.

“Lily, come to me.”

The child tried to move away from the piano.

Victoria reached her first.

From where the guests sat, they could not see Victoria’s hand clearly. They only saw Lily stumble backward and begin crying.

Rosa caught her before she fell.

“She’s only three,” Rosa said. “Why did you push her?”

Victoria pointed toward the doorway.

“The maid’s child had no right to touch my piano.”

The words were louder than she intended.

They traveled across the silent ballroom.

Ethan approached Lily.

When he knelt and looked into her eyes, the remaining pieces aligned.

The dates.

The letters.

His mother’s recording.

Victoria’s investigation.

The fear in Richard’s face.

“Rosa,” he whispered. “How old is she?”

“Three years old.”

Ethan turned toward Victoria.

“Those are my mother’s eyes. Lily is my daughter.”

Victoria’s attention moved toward the envelope lying on the piano.

She lunged.

Ethan reached it first.

The scene unfolded exactly as Eleanor had predicted in her letter.

Arthur entered with the officers.

Victoria’s private plan became a public collapse.

But one detail had changed.

The sealed envelope contained more than a laboratory report.

When Ethan opened it, a small memory card fell onto the piano.

Victoria saw it.

She stopped fighting for the report.

Instead, she grabbed the memory card and ran toward the staircase.

An officer blocked her.

Victoria threw the card toward Richard.

He caught it.

Ethan stared at his father.

“Give it to me.”

Richard closed his fist.

“You don’t know what is recorded here.”

“My mother wanted me to see it.”

“Your mother wanted revenge.”

“Against whom?”

Richard looked toward the guests.

Every face had turned toward him.

Victoria shouted from behind the officers.

“Destroy it.”

Richard’s hand moved toward a glass of water.

He intended to drop the card inside.

Before he could, Lily spoke.

“Grandpa.”

The word stopped him.

Richard looked at the child.

Lily pointed to his cane.

“There’s a little door.”

Everyone stared.

A narrow compartment in the cane handle had opened when Richard tightened his grip.

Inside was another memory card.

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Richard, place the cane on the floor.”

Richard backed away.

The officers moved closer.

He turned and ran through the side doors.

The wedding guests erupted into confusion.

Ethan handed the paternity report to Arthur and followed.

Behind him, Rosa held Lily tightly.

On the piano, the first memory card remained beneath the glass where Richard had dropped it.

Its label was visible.
