Chapter 13: The Gala of Masks

The Whitmore Children’s Foundation Gala was the most photographed charity event in Los Angeles.
Julian should not have attended.
His invitation had been approved months earlier, before Ava returned publicly to the Whitmore stage. His advisors begged him to stay away. Vanessa demanded he take her, then screamed when he refused.
He went alone.
The ballroom glowed with chandeliers, white roses, and quiet money. Senators, surgeons, actors, CEOs, and old families filled the room.
Then Ava entered with Arthur Whitmore.
The room shifted around her.
Arthur used a cane that evening, refusing his wheelchair in front of the cameras. Ava walked beside him, one hand lightly supporting his arm. Behind them came Lucas, Caleb, and Noah in matching dark suits.
Julian forgot how to breathe.
The boys looked around with curiosity, not fear. Caleb whispered something to Noah. Lucas noticed Julian immediately.
Their eyes met.
Julian felt the impact like a hand around his throat.
Arthur stepped onto the stage.
“Tonight,” he said into the microphone, “the Whitmore Foundation expands its mission to protect children who are failed by the adults responsible for them.”
The room applauded.
Arthur continued.
“Five years ago, my granddaughter came back to this family carrying three lives and a heart full of betrayal. She asked for privacy, not revenge. She asked for safety, not headlines. Tonight, with her permission, I tell you only this: no woman should be destroyed by lies because powerful people find truth inconvenient.”
The applause faded into stunned silence.
Ava stood still.
Julian felt every eye in the room begin to move, searching for the unnamed villain in Arthur’s speech.
Then Vanessa appeared at the ballroom entrance.
Uninvited.
Furious.
Her red dress looked almost black beneath the chandeliers.
She walked straight toward Ava.
“You don’t get to play saint,” Vanessa said loudly. “Tell them how you hid Julian’s children from him.”
Gasps spread through the room.
Julian stood.
Ava turned slowly.
Arthur’s expression became ice.
Vanessa smiled wildly, believing she had finally forced the truth into the open.
Ava stepped onto the stage and took the microphone.
“You’re right,” she said.

The ballroom fell silent.
“It is time everyone heard the truth.”
