Chapter 1: The Man Who Wanted Her Broken

Julian Hart did not chase the Bentley at first.
He simply stood under the pale afternoon sun, watching the car glide away from the VIP terminal like a black blade cutting through the city.
Vanessa Vale, the woman in the red dress, tightened her fingers around his arm.
“Julian,” she said. “People are looking.”
He heard her, but the words came from far away.
Three boys.
Three identical little boys.
Three voices calling Ava Mom.
He had heard many things in business that should have shocked him. Bankruptcy threats. Hostile takeover attempts. Secret recordings. Boardroom betrayals. But nothing had ever struck him with the force of those three children running into Ava’s arms.
Because he had seen their faces.
He knew those eyes.
The oldest boy had stared at him for half a second before climbing into the Bentley, and Julian felt as if he were staring at a younger version of himself.
Impossible, he told himself.
Ava had left with nothing.
Ava had no powerful family. No money. No protection. No future.
At least, that was what he had believed.
Five years ago, he had signed the divorce papers without looking at her face. His mother had stood beside him, cold and satisfied. Vanessa had remained outside the room, pretending to be innocent. Ava had tried to tell him something that night, but he had cut her off.
“I don’t want to hear another lie,” he had said.
That sentence returned to him now, sharp as broken glass.
Vanessa pulled him toward their waiting car.
“You’re not seriously thinking about her, are you?” she asked.
Julian looked at her.
For the first time, Vanessa seemed uneasy.
“She probably remarried,” Vanessa said quickly. “Or adopted them. Rich women do that for attention.”
“Rich women?” Julian repeated.
Vanessa’s smile stiffened. “I mean… whoever she works for. That driver called her Madam. It could be a misunderstanding.”
But Julian’s mind had already caught on one detail.
The driver had not acted like Ava worked for someone.
He had acted like she was someone.
As Julian’s car pulled away from the terminal, he turned his face toward the window. In the glass reflection, he saw Vanessa watching him carefully, almost fearfully.
A thought entered his mind, one he did not want and could not push away.
