Chapter 9 - The Brother at the Window

The bullet struck Richard high in the shoulder.

He collapsed behind the table, alive and screaming. Maya dragged Susan to the floor as a second shot shattered the lantern above them. Federal agents stormed the cabin. Outside, a figure moved through the trees toward a waiting motorcycle.

Ortiz's team pursued, but the rider escaped across an old railway bridge wired with explosives. The bridge collapsed behind him into the ravine.

Conrad had not come to rescue anyone. He had come to silence Richard and recover the real ring.

At the hospital, Richard underwent surgery under armed guard. Susan was treated for dehydration and a fractured rib. Maya sat beside her bed, unable to decide whether to embrace her or demand answers.

Susan made the choice for her.

"I am sorry," she said.

Maya laughed once, without humor. "Which part?"

"All of it."

"You let me bury you."

"Conrad promised he would leave you alone if I disappeared. I watched your wedding from a car across the street. When I saw Richard, I knew Conrad had lied."

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Because by then Lily was born, and they had placed watchers everywhere. I tried to collect enough evidence to destroy the system at once. Every year I waited, I told myself it was to protect you. Eventually, I was protecting my own fear."

Maya wanted a simple villain. Susan denied her that comfort. Love and cowardice could live in the same person.

Susan explained the orchid ring. Its center stone unscrewed to reveal a strip of microfilm containing coordinates. Helena had divided the vault location among three rings. Celeste held the first, Julian the second, Amelia the third. After Helena's death, Julian's ring vanished. Conrad had his own ring copied from Celeste's but lacked the sequence needed to decode the coordinates.

"Where is Celeste?" Maya asked.

"She ran the Garden."

Julian, standing near the door, went pale.

Susan continued. "At first, Celeste rescued children the network intended to erase. She built hidden schools and new identities. Then the system changed her. She began choosing which children deserved to disappear. Some were saved. Some were used. Conrad financed her, then tried to control her. They became enemies sharing the same secret."

"Is she alive?"

"I saw her three months ago. She took Julian's ring from Helena's crash site."

That night, the birthday video was released publicly.

The unedited footage spread faster than Richard's lawyers could respond. Millions watched him seize Maya by the hair and drive her face into the cake while Lily screamed. Sponsors cut ties with Ashford Risk Management. Clients terminated contracts. Olivia's foundation removed her name from its website, but reporters soon connected it to Saint Orison.

Outside the hospital where Richard lay guarded, protesters held signs bearing pink sugar roses.

Maya did not feel triumphant. Public outrage was powerful and brief. Legal control mattered more.

Vanessa signed a cooperation agreement. Dr. Vale was arrested for falsifying records. Olivia vanished before agents reached the estate.

In Richard's office, investigators discovered a hidden safe containing passports, cash, and one photograph of Celeste. On the back was an address in Montreal and a message: THE GIRL OPENS THE DOOR. THE CHILD KEEPS IT OPEN.

Maya knew the girl meant her. The child meant Lily.

At dawn, Lily asked to see her father.

Maya knelt beside her. "He is in the hospital."

"Because somebody hurt him?"

"Yes."

"Like he hurt you?"

Maya chose each word. "Being hurt does not make what he did right. And what he did does not mean we should want him hurt."

Lily thought about this. "Can I draw him a picture?"

Maya let her.

The picture showed three people beneath a yellow sun. Richard stood far away beside a black square. Maya and Lily held hands near a blue house.

When Maya carried it to the guarded hospital room, Richard was awake.

He looked at the drawing and began to cry.

For one second, Maya saw the man he might have been.

Then he whispered, "Olivia has Lily's original birth file. If the court sees it, you will lose her."

"What did you do?"

Richard smiled through his tears.

"Ask Julian why your daughter's blood type is impossible."

May you like

Richard's tears over Lily's drawing unsettled Maya more than his threats. Cruel people were easier to leave when they displayed only cruelty. Richard contained memories of tenderness, jokes shared in grocery aisles, and nights holding a feverish child. Those moments did not absolve him. They explained why leaving had taken so long. Maya wrote this distinction in a statement for other survivors: love experienced in the past does not create a debt to endure violence in the present.

Outside the hospital, pink sugar roses became a symbol used by protesters. Maya asked supporters to stop sending cakes to Richard's family because humiliation was not justice. She redirected donations toward emergency housing and legal aid. The decision frustrated people who wanted spectacle, but it began separating her future from Richard's methods.
