Chapter 12 - Nine Minutes Before the Empire Burned

The countdown began at 08:59.

Panic swept the opera house. Guests rushed the sealed exits. Agents shouted for everyone to remain low. Red emergency lights turned jewels and champagne into the color of blood.

Conrad's voice came through the sound system.

"The archive is beneath this building. When the timer reaches zero, thermite charges will destroy it and everyone above it. Insert all three rings to stop the sequence."

He had Celeste's ring now; it had fallen when she was shot. Julian still wore his. Maya's lay near Richard.

Richard reached it first.

He seized Lily again and dragged her toward the orchestra pit. "No one follows!"

Maya did.

Richard descended into the musicians' corridor with Lily held against him. His injured shoulder bled through his coat. He was desperate, frightened, and more dangerous than ever.

"You don't need her," Maya said.

"I need a future. Conrad promised one."

"Conrad just locked you inside a building set to burn."

Richard's eyes flickered toward the timer display mounted in the corridor. 06:42.

"He'll stop it."

"He left you in the hospital convoy. He used you to bring Lily here. You are not his partner. You are the last disposable witness."

Lily whispered, "Daddy, you're hurting me."

Richard loosened his grip without meaning to. Maya saw the father buried beneath calculation, the man who had once stayed awake all night when Lily had a fever. She spoke to that fragment.

"Let her go, Richard. Whatever happens next, let one thing be yours because you chose it."

The building shook. Smoke entered through the vents.

Richard released Lily.

She ran to Maya.

Then a bullet struck Richard in the back.

Conrad emerged from the tunnel behind him.

Richard fell at Maya's feet. His mouth moved, but no sound came. Conrad removed the ring from his hand and continued toward the archive chamber.

Maya carried Lily into the orchestra pit and handed her to Ortiz, who had reached them through another passage. "Take her out through the river tunnel."

"The exits are sealed."

"There is always another exit in a Sterling house."

Maya followed Conrad underground.

At 04:10, she reached a circular chamber beneath the stage. Shelves of paper ledgers and metal cases surrounded a central console with three ring slots. Julian arrived from the opposite stairwell, supporting the wounded Celeste.

Conrad pointed his gun at Maya. "Insert your ring."

"You already have it."

"The third slot is biometric. Helena designed it for her daughter's blood."

Celeste laughed weakly. "Helena designed it so no one could open the archive by force."

Conrad shot her again.

Julian caught his sister as she fell. Maya rushed Conrad. The gun fired into the ceiling. They struggled beside the console while the timer reached 01:12.

Conrad was stronger, but he underestimated the woman he had watched through other people's reports. Maya drove the metal ring into the wound on his hand. He recoiled. Julian struck him with a steel case.

At 00:31, Maya pressed her bleeding thumb to the third slot. Julian inserted his ring. Celeste, barely conscious, extended hers.

The timer stopped at 00:04.

The chamber lights changed from red to white.

Every screen activated.

Files began uploading automatically to courts, regulators, and news organizations around the world.

Conrad crawled toward the console. "Stop it. You don't know what Helena recorded."

A video filled the largest screen.

Helena Sterling appeared, holding newborn Amelia.

"If this archive opens," she said, "then my family failed to protect my daughter. Julian, forgive me. Conrad, I know what you did. Celeste, the Garden cannot remain hidden."

Maya stared as her mother looked directly into the camera.

"And Amelia, before you claim this empire, you must know the truth. Julian Sterling is not my brother. He is your father."

As the archive uploaded, Ortiz received messages from prosecutors trying to halt the release. Some warned of national security damage; others begged for time to protect victims. Maya ordered the system to redact children's current addresses while preserving evidence against adults. Helena had built that option into the interface, proof that she had anticipated the moral conflict. The decision prevented immediate exposure of hundreds of survivors while making suppression of the crimes impossible.

Richard's final decision to release Lily did not erase what he had done. Yet Maya allowed investigators to record it because truth required complete accounts, not convenient monsters. A person could commit one decent act at the edge of ruin and still be responsible for years of harm.
