Chapter 9 - The Third Child

The attackers withdrew before state police reached Northlight Rest.

They left behind two burned vehicles, false identification, and one wounded gunman who died without speaking. The rifles had been purchased through a security company funded by a Continuance charity.

Inside the cottage, Evelyn refused to let either brother near her.

Clara demanded an explanation.

Evelyn’s hands trembled as she drew three circles on a sheet of paper.

“You were not my only child,” she said.

Clara stared at the circles.

“I gave birth to twin boys first. Two years later, I had you.”

Julian and Sebastian stood on opposite sides of the room.

Evelyn pointed at Sebastian.

“You are Adrian Armitage.”

Sebastian’s face lost all expression.

“No.”

“I named you Adrian after my father.”

Gabriel arrived from the hospital under armed escort. When he entered, Evelyn looked at him with a grief so intimate that Clara understood before either spoke.

They had loved each other.

Gabriel stopped several feet away.

“I thought you were dead.”

“So did I.”

Eleanor had not simply stolen wealth.

She had dismantled two families and rebuilt them in shapes she could control.

Gabriel explained what he remembered. Thirty-four years earlier, before his marriage to Eleanor became public, he had a secret relationship with Evelyn. She became pregnant with twins. The Continuance feared the children would unite the Armitage assets with Gabriel’s knowledge of Vale accounts.

One infant was declared dead.

The other disappeared.

Months later, Eleanor announced the birth of her own twin sons, Julian and Sebastian.

“Were there truly two Vale babies?” Clara asked.

Gabriel’s face crumpled.

“Eleanor miscarried one. Julian survived. Samuel replaced the lost child with Adrian.”

Sebastian stepped backward as though the floor had moved.

“You’re lying.”

Evelyn reached toward him. “You had a crescent-shaped mark behind your left ear.”

Sebastian touched the spot unconsciously.

Clara had seen the mark years earlier on Julian.

She turned to him.

Julian’s hand rose to his own neck.

A matching mark.

Evelyn looked between them, confused.

“Both,” she whispered.

Gabriel frowned. “That’s impossible.”

The brothers stared at each other.

Cole requested DNA samples immediately.

Results would take hours even with emergency processing.

During the wait, Sienna appeared.

She arrived in an unmarked vehicle with her wounded arm in a sling and Quinn’s blood on her coat.

Cole nearly arrested her at the gate.

“Quinn is dead,” Sienna said.

“How?”

“The archive rejected the succession transfer. She tried to force it, and the Continuance team decided she was a liability.”

“Where is the ledger?”

“Gone.”

“Who has it?”

“The first custodian.”

Evelyn began shaking again.

Sienna saw her and stopped.

“So she is alive.”

Clara stood between them. “Tell us who the custodian is.”

Sienna looked at Julian.

“You know him as Charles Wren.”

Julian’s face changed.

Charles Wren had been Eleanor’s oldest family adviser, the quiet gray-haired man who attended every Vale wedding, funeral, and board meeting. He had taught Julian to ride, managed Gabriel’s estate after his supposed death, and gave the toast at Clara’s wedding.

“He is eighty,” Julian said.

“He is one hundred and four,” Sienna replied. “The Continuance has kept his identity active through controlled records and medical treatment. Wren is not his birth name.”

Evelyn whispered, “Caleb Armitage.”

Clara’s grandfather had supposedly died before Evelyn disappeared.

“He faked his death?” Clara asked.

“He created the Continuance,” Evelyn said. “He believed inheritance should never pass to weak hands. Children were tested, moved, replaced. Families became experiments.”

Clara looked at the three circles on the paper.

“Did he order my death?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were born outside his plan.”

The DNA results arrived at 11:06 p.m.

Cole read them once, then again.

“What?” Clara asked.

He placed the report on the table.

Julian and Sebastian were identical twins.

Both were biologically related to Evelyn and Gabriel.

Neither was Eleanor’s son.

Silence swallowed the room.

Gabriel gripped the back of a chair.

“That cannot be.”

Evelyn began to cry.

Julian stared at the report, every certainty stripped from his face.

Sienna spoke first.

“Eleanor’s surviving child was switched too.”

Clara understood the implication.

Somewhere, there had been a third infant.

The real Vale heir.

The child Eleanor believed she had raised.

Or perhaps the child who had been raised elsewhere.

Cole’s phone rang.

He listened, said nothing, then ended the call.

“Eleanor escaped transport twenty minutes ago.”

Julian looked toward the dark windows.

“Wren took her.”

“No,” Sienna said. “She went willingly.”

A message appeared on Clara’s phone from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph taken seconds earlier.

Eleanor stood beside Charles Wren inside the Vale Foundation boardroom.

Between them sat a young man Clara recognized.

Detective Adrian Cole.

Clara looked up.

Cole was still standing in front of her.

Then she looked back at the photograph.

The man in the image had Cole’s face.

May you like

And beneath it were six words.

THE THIRD CHILD HAS COME HOME.
